Description:

This is an international swap. Must have completed at least 5 non-internet swaps successfully. No unexplained no-sends. PM me if you have "issues" but would still like to join, and I'll consider it.

I have hosted several gluebook swaps and they are always FABULOUS. If you have never made one or heard of it IT IS SUPER EASY. No crafting talent or craft supplies are needed! And you can't really do it wrong.

A gluebook is simply any book (usually blank but you can use any book you like) and it has things glued into it. That's it! What kind of things? Anything you like. At the simplest level, gluebooks contain collages made from pictures or words cut out of magazines or other printed material.

So if you can acquire a book (one that lays open flat is easiest to use, and keep size/weight in mind bc you will have to mail it), some glue (Elmer's, rubber cement, craft glue), a pair of scissors, and a printed source of images (like a magazine), then YOU can make a gluebook.

The theme of this GLUEBOOK is:

What Makes US Happy

"US" means you AND your partner. You will create a title page about you and your partner (use your partner's profile for ideas of what he/she likes). If you like the same things, this will be easy. If not, it's a challenge. You will then create 8-10 pages minimum (this is 4-5 spreads) about YOU and 8-10 pages minimum about your PARTNER. (they don't have to be clumped together or even in spreads - your choice)

And the theme is, what makes you happy?

I say minimum bc if you would like to fill up the book go right ahead. But you can do the minimum and leave space for your partner to continue the book too.

A gluebook is not the same as an art journal, or an altered book, or a diary, or a scrapbook. But it can include the same things. If you want to use techniques from these in the gluebook go ahead -- like drawing/sketching, stamping, inking, sewing, journaling/writing etc.

BUT IT IS NOT NECESSARY to do anything more than GLUE STUFF DOWN.

You will have only 2 weeks to create your book HOWEVER, you can start the pages about you at any time. And since there are no fancy techniques or other requirements, this can take as little as an hour to create.

Some ideas of what you can include:

  • pictures/words from magazines
  • pictures/words from junk mail
  • tickets (to movies, concerts, plays, museums, events, etc)
  • brochures
  • notions - fibers, ribbons, fabric, buttons
  • scrapbooking supplies, including stickers, paper, brads, etc
  • photographs
  • really cool packaging (or ugly packaging, if it makes you happy)
  • any ephemera of your daily life - receipts, business cards, clothing tags, etc
  • postage stamps, postcards, etc
  • bookmarks
  • greeting cards
  • ATCs

The only other requirement is that gluebooks are about FOUND ITEMS or images. Meaning, no downloading images from the internet and printing them out, no typing text to put in. Less virtual and more actual.

Use Google to find galleries of gluebooks if you need ideas.

Since I broke my wrist I have been pining away due to lack of creative ability (meaning can't actually make anything). Now that the cast is off I am dying for a reason to get started again. Message me if you have questions and thanks!

I would love to join this swap but have way too many things going on at the moment. But if you host another in the future (please do!) then I'll happily join that.

I am so tempted to do this one, but the timing is wrong for me and I would hate to be a flaker. However, if you do another one later, I would like to be included. These glue-books are fun and very therapeutic.

What size should the book be?

Meadow 04/10/2008 #

Alisa - the book can be any size as long as you can mail it and it has enough pages. I hate to restrict you. If a wee little book will make you [or your partner] happy then go for it.

Most gluebooks are made using a standard size blank book or composition book, say 6 x 9" to 8 x 10" but i dont want to restrict this.

Lulu- I agree! so fun! And I really enjoy getting other peoples' take on the gluebook too.

Thanks :)

I am so excited! And a little nervous because I've never made a gluebook before. I've been wanting to, though...

That's what I love about swap-bot, you get to try all kinds of cool things that you might not have thought of yourself!

Meadow- this is a great swap! This month is hectic for me, but I hope you'll host more gluebook swaps in the future:)

Starwatcher 04/14/2008 #

What fun! I keep adding pages to my section - I'm just using a composition book I've decorated - can hardly wait to work on my partner's pages! Great swap idea, Meadow!

I want to do one of these. I'm afraid because it's stuff that makes me happy I'll just want to keep it to myself. lol What about a 6x6 album would that be okay? I hope you have another in the future. I would like to join but I don't have a lot of sources right now. I usually scan things and then throw them away :) And for vintage items I always scan and use the copies so I can keep the originals.
