Description:

Do you make artwork? Do you like to put your artwork onto postcards? Do you want to have a penpal who does the same thing? Well, here's a convenient opportunity to combine all these things in one fun exercise!

This swap is designed for people here on swap-bot who make artwork and would like to find a penpal with whom to share your artwork and your stories (you don't have to consider yourself "An Artist," if that makes you uncomfortable, but if you're joining this swap you should be the type of person who creates images that are your very own, whatever that means to you).

If you think you want to give this a go, please read the rules carefully, because they're a little bit more complicated than my usual swap guidelines:

  • 1 - This swap has "one partner," but actually you will be exchanging cards with two people: the person you are assigned to and the person who is assigned to send to you.
  • 2 - The total number of cards you will be sending is 6, because you're going to exchange three cards with each of your two partners. The swap deadline is the time by which you have to send out your first card. Please include your address when sending to your assigned partner, so they know where to write back to you.
  • 3 - You can feel free to keep writing to your partners and sending cards forever, but to meet the swap requirements, you have to send three cards to each person.
  • 4 - The cards you send must feature your artwork in some way. They could be original drawings or paintings, or they could just as easily be computer printouts of scans you made from a drawing, or even commercial cards you had printed by some company. As long as your artwork is on there somehow.
  • 5 - Tell your partner about yourself! Give your life story, or say what books you're reading lately, or what silly thing your kid did today. Or why you make art... It's not hard to think of interesting things to say, because humans are inherently pretty interesting!
  • 6 - This swap is for open-minded folks! We want to get to know each other, so feel free to write about anything you like, but please try not to offend your partner by saying insulting things about their politics or their religion or their atheism or their cat.

If you find any of these rules confusing, please feel free to post a comment below (I promise to check regularly), or pm me with questions!

I really hope this swap works out, because I personally could do with more artsy postcard penpals, and the people here are pretty awesome!

The fine print:
This swap is INTERNATIONAL.
Cards must conform to standard USA postcard sizes - they must be between 3.5" by 5" and 4.25" by 6".
Must have a 4.8 or higher rating, and have successfully completed at least three snail-mail swaps.

does photography count as artwork for this?

solarts 08/22/2008 #

May we create a collage of cut out magazine or postcard pictures to add to our handmade postcards?

lookcloselypress 08/23/2008 #

Hmmm... Photography counts as artwork as long as it's really unusual or different (i.e. a photo of some palm trees, not so much, whereas a really thoughtful photo of something that isn't a common subject, definitely awesome).

Collage artwork is totally fine as long as you're confident that you've created a collage image that definitely counts as YOUR work. What that means is totally up to you!

Ok. What do you mean from the above example about photography? Sorry I'm not clear what you mean by "... that isn't a common subject." Maybe a theme would narrow it down?

If anyone is interested in my new swap for Halloween. "Boo! Halloween Swap" http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/19880 Yes, I know it's a bit early but I wanted to give everyone a chance to raise their points or to think about whether or not to join or etc. Happy swapping!

I have a new swap for Halloween if your interested to check it out. "Halloween Spooksville Fun Mail!" in Oct. http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/20560 Ciao!

I'm going to say that photography is fine for ONE of your three postcards to each of your partners, and you can send ANY photo you like. That way there's no confusion (you're right - that was a bit of an overly complicated explanation!).

solarts 08/25/2008 #

Ok. thanks.

Can't resist this one!!!!

How does the rating system work for this swap?

lookcloselypress 09/13/2008 #

You only rate your assigned partner, and I'm kind of hoping that people will be honest here, because the format of this swap is a little bit complicated for Swap-Bot's rating system. If we have any flakers, people should let me know and I'll try to figure out what to do. But I'll be checking everyone's profile even more carefully than usual, so hopefully we'll all be good about completing the swap. If anybody has any suggestions in this area, feel free to post them here!
