Description:

I have had this idea floating around my head for a couple of weeks now, and thought i would take the plunge and see how many of you will join me in this.

With the holiday seasons (halloween, thanks giving, christmas) just around the corner and the global need to protect our environment, i thought it would be a FUN AND USEFUL way to center a swap around energy saving/recycling.

I am not as green as i could (should) be, sure, i recycle my rubbish, i turn off appliances, i use reusable bags (when i remember to bring them) but im sure i could do more, so, if you are with me in that, then this swap is for you :)

We will have ONE partner, we will send this partner ONE energy saving/recycable item, that we have found useful. (this could be a handmade tote for shopping, tumble dryer balls, wash balls, handmade dishcloth, dispenser unit, measuring cups) PLUS you will send a small note/letter explaining what YOU do to be greener. (this could be turning off appliances, making less journeys in the car, turning the wash cycle to 30 instead of 40) You will wrap the package in an environmentally aware manner e.g. instead of wrapping paper, use a dishcloth/kitchen towel/piece of fabric, put the items in a box and wrap it the old fashioned way in brown paper, use a recycled envelope...

As this is an issue that touches ALL nations, all over the world, im making it an international swap. It will also be fascinating to see, how other countries promote environmental awareness.

This swap will be open to swappers with a rating of 4.8 +, no recent (3 months) unexplained no sends, newbies are welcome with a minimum of three MAIL swaps (i wont count email/postcard swaps for this) and a FULL profile

To sum it all up:

-One Partner (international) -One useful item to help save energy/environment -One letter with tips/hints what YOU do -Use recycled/environmental friendly packaging

What a great idea! I have some ideas already!

ok, so it seems that some people are unsure of what to send for the "item" required... so here are some ideas to get you started :)

how about:

  • a holder for plastic bags (itll be much nicer to take a funky holder than a bunch of scrunched up plastic bags)

  • dishcloths/kitchen wipes knitted or crocheted to minimise kitchen waste (use of paper towels for wiping/1 use cloths)

  • an altered soap dispenser to help limit the amount of soap used

  • tumble dryer balls to minimise/eliminate use of softeners

  • washballs to minimise/eliminate use of detergent

  • morse bag/shopping tote to minimise use of plastic bags

  • big canvas bag to cart recycables to the recycle center in (maybe an altered ikea bag??) to save plastic bags being left behind

  • one of those windup torches (to save on batteries)

  • bento boxes/lunch boxes/pretty tupperware or storage containers (to save on extra packaging for lunches)

  • funky/pretty drinks cannister (to save on tins/cartons of juice)

  • measuring cups (to help with minimising unnecessary wastage)

You could also add eco friendly gift bags to wrap holiday gifts.

thats another really good idea :) you gonna join us robin????

I'd be happy to join. I have it on my watch list, but I have some really cute bags already embroidered with holiday design, so I'll probably use those. I just need to sew them up and put in the draw strings.

They are very simple bags. I hope that's okay.

Another idea I had was to make some kind of cloth ornament and stuff it with shredded paper or grocery bags.
