Description:

I can\\\\'t believe how many new patterns from this Springs\\\\'s Interweave Knits call for Ecofriendly fibers.

It\\\\'s great that there are so many new ones coming out all the time.

This is a swap for ecofriendly fibers. This would include: organic yarns, yarns made from more renewable resources such as bamboo, soy (byproducts) or corn (byproducts). In addition to the many fibers being producted by the Southwest Trading Company, the Vermont Organic Fiber Company, Blue Sky Alpacas, Trekking (ProNatura) and even Classic Elite produce more environmentally friendly yarns.

In the spirit of trying out these new fibers, I\\\\'ve decided to arrange a swap.

  1. Sign up for the swap by March 15th.
  2. You will receive a questionnaire by March 17th.
  3. Fill it out by March 21st!
  4. Swap bot will assign swap partners on the 15th.
  5. If you do withdraw, please please let me know so I can try to get everyone matched up. Please don\'t drop out without contacting me (MoiraeKnitting at gmail dot com).
  6. Send out swap packages by April 15th - the idea is to get your package to your partner by Earth Day in the US (April 22nd).
  7. Post about your swaps and enjoy your new fibers.

Rules: 1. Dropping out without letting anyone know will earn you bad kharma from Swap Bot. 2. The suggested spending limit is $45, not including shipping. 3. Have fun!

How many skeins do we send?

moirae 02/22/2007 #

I\'d like people to send enough for a small project. Just keep the spending limit in mind.

A great place to obtain yarn is kpixie! http://www.kpixie.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=35_38

Here is the question list. Please feel free to answer questions I haven't asked!

  1. What colors do you prefer?

  2. Have you ever knit socks? If not, are you willing to try? (If not, do you own any double point needles?)

  3. Have you tried any of the earth friendly fibers? If, so which ones have you tried? What did you knit? What did you like or dislike about the fiber you tried? Would you try it again?

  4. Is there a particular fiber you are hankering to try?

  5. Do you have any allergies? (Fiber or otherwise.)

  6. How do you plan to celebrate Earth Day? Or, how have you celebrated Earth Day in the past?

  7. Do you have any Earth Day resolutions? What are they?

Dear Moirae,

I have asked my partner to send me her answers. I checked out the kpixie site, gorgeous. I have also been browsing around, and besides bamboo, soy and corn/maize, renewable yarn is also being made from milk protein(casein),crabs(chitin) and seaweed (C-cell or seasilk), so these qualify as eco-friendly yarns too. How lucky we are to have so much choice. In the questionaire, can you ask whether our partner prefers plain or variegated, and what size top she wears, so we can send enough for a small project? Thanks

I have posted my answers to Moirae's questions up on my blog. I have contacted ghostknitter and I have her answers. But I haven't heard from anyone.

At the request of some of the participants, I've slightly modified the questionnaire. I'm sorry for being so slow to respond myself. I was procrastinating and then I really did get pretty sick. I'm feeling loads better this morning, so I will stop being a bad swap hostess and answer the questions and follow up on stuff. 1. What colors do you prefer? - I like all kinds of colors in socks. In tops though, I prefer neutrals, cool blues, or warm colors, but not orange. 2. Have you ever knit socks? If not, are you willing to try? (If not, do you own any double point needles?) - Yes and I have lots of double point needles. I love knitting socks. 3. Have you tried any of the earth friendly fibers? If, so which ones have you tried? What did you knit? What did you like or dislike about the fiber you tried? Would you try it again? - I've bought a few things - Seacoast Handpaints and Panda Cotton, but I have yet to try it out. I'd love to try the sea silk some time. I've got a Victorian Lace Today book that probably would go great with the sea silk. My mom has 2 skeins and its gorgeous stuff. 4. Is there a particular fiber you are hankering to try? Sea Silk. I was seriously jealous of Grumperina's melon scarf. 5. Do you have any allergies? (Fiber or otherwise.) Smoke. 6. How do you plan to celebrate Earth Day? Or, how have you celebrated Earth Day in the past? - Sometimes I go around and look for local celebrations. I try to make a personal commitment to do something better for the planet each year. Last year I replaced 1 light bulb with a compact fluroescent. Now we're up to three. They are great for outdoor lights and there's a lamp we leave on a lot, so we put one in there also. I plan to put others in our hallway lights. This year I mostly plan to recycle clothes to goodwill as part of a purge to prepare for our upcoming move. 7. Do you have any Earth Day resolutions? What are they? - Selfishly, I resolve to get a job working in my chosen field - environmental policy and sustainability planning. 8. Do you prefer plain or variegated socks? - Neither. I love socks. 9. What size top do you wear? 6-8 depending. I wear a 6, but I have big arms, so I use much much larger sleeve holes. 10. Would you be willing to try any lace knitting?- See my comment regarding sea silk.

Whee, this is going to be so much fun!
