Description:

Europe only to keep postage costs a bit lower.

This swap is for anyone who has wanted to have a go at binding their own journal but needs a push in the right direction. You've been meaning to get round to it for some time, but haven't quite made it to the top of your to do list. Of course, you don't have to be a beginner, but do bear in mind you may receive a journal from a beginner.

For this swap you will create one handbound journal for your partner. You may bind the journal in any way you choose. Please put a bit of effort into making a nice journal for your partner. This is a beginners swap so it doesn't have to be perfect but please send something you would want to receive yourself and not just a few pages stapled together.

There are many examples of binding styles and many tutorials online showing the different methods. Just do a google search for "book binding tutorial" if you're stuck.

Some rules:

You must have bound the journal yourself using any method you choose

The journal must be at least 5" x 5" in size, but can be as large as you choose.

You must include at least 40 pages - a page is defined as one side of one leaf

You can use any paper/materials you choose but please ensure you send a journal that will withstand frequent use.

You must have a score of at least 4.85 to join.

Nobody with less than 10 mailed swaps (not including postcards) as this is a high effort swap.

I reserve the right to remove swappers who I think are suspect regardless of score and that includes swappers with recent ones and threes.

You must communicate with both me and your partner if you are late for any reason. I reserve the right to reroute swaps if, after partners are assigned, I uncover a flaker.

Rating:

A 5 should be given for a handbound journal that meets the above requirements and is sent on time. Don't rate down for flaws in craftsmanship. This may be your partner's first attempt at journal making so go easy on them.

Please contact your partner and allow them the opportunity to respond prior to rating 3 or 1.

Hearts are obviously at your discretion and should be given based on the journal, not any extras that may be included.

This sounds like a great swap!! I'm keeping it on my watchlist as I still need another couple of swaps under my belt, but I should qualify at the end of July. Also, this is my favorite tute for hand bound books, I've used it a couple of times and it produces great results: http://curiouslycrafty.wordpress.com/tutorials/

I'm not a beginner but can't resist making a book for someone. More journal swaps needed!

great, thanks ladies.

I'm going to make the minimum dimensions slightly smaller. Hope that's ok.

Can I use a Mead Composition book? I tear it apart, cover it in leather, use fabric on the inside of the covers, sew the pages back in using embroidery floss and embellish the whole thing in beads and bits of jewelry. The people I have done these for don't know they started out life as a composition book or are you looking for a totally from scratch effort?

Nevermind, you are doing Europe only. Too bad for me....
