ATZ – A(rtist) T(rading) Z(ine)
Okay, so we all know what an ATC is (if not, click here). Well, it occurred to me that, on the whole, mini-zines also tend to be traded rather than sold (although of course, there are exceptions), so why not combine the concepts?

So for this swap you will create an ATZ. In size, this will be 1/8th of a standard sheet of copier/printer paper (A4 in the UK & other countries, letter-size in USA), with a minimum of 8 pages (including front & back). You can fold a 'traditional' mini-zine, or you can staple/stitch bind a mini-zine of the same size. You can use whatever type of paper suits your artwork.

The front of the ATZ will be a hand-made piece of your artwork (or craftwork – I will use both terms interchangeably in this swap description: arts & crafts are equally welcome to participate!), whatever form/medium that takes: it could be digital artwork, collage, drawing, painting, printwork, embroidery, or even a knitted swatch! If the zine paper is not substantial enough for you to work on directly, feel free to reinforce with cardstock (etc).

The back of the ATZ will bear all the information that you would expect to find on the reverse of an ATC. Please provide at least: Title of artwork (even if the title is [Untitled]!), your name (can be real name, SB user name, or another pseudonym), and date. You can include any other info/notes you like, eg edition (if applicable), medium, inspiration etc.

Within the pages of the ATZ, you can include whatever additional content you choose. You could:

  • make a mini gallery/portfolio of your other artwork
  • include an artist's bio
  • describe your medium/techniques
  • talk about the inspiration for your artwork
  • provide a tutorial for a particular technique

etc etc – the ATZ content is entirely up to you. It can be entirely pictorial, entirely text, or a mix of both (the above ideas are just suggestions).

Requirements

  • You will have 2 partners and send each partner 1 ATZ.
  • Each ATZ will be 1/8th letter-size/A4 & a minimum of 8 pages.

The obvious bit
You already had to have a rating of 4.9+ with no recent no-sends, 1s or 3s to join this group anyway, so the same stands for this swap. But I will still double-check before assigning partners, so if you have what you feel is an unfair comment or rating, just PM me & we can try to work it out. :-)

Thanks! I had the idea a little while back - thought it would be fun (& a little bit different) :-)

Thanks for hosting this swap!!!!! I wanted to do do this for some time but never could figure what to call it. Is it ok if I just use standard atc measurements? Also, is it ok to use pics I have found that I like or does it have to be "artwork"

Feel free to make the mini-zine 2.5" x 3.5" but I would think folding down from letter-size would be a lot easier. Might make more sense to fold down your mini-zine then attach a standard ATC to the front cover?

In terms of 'artwork', well, the ATZ is supposed to be a representation of your own work, just like an ATC is. So if your artwork uses found pics (eg collage) then that's fine; but if you just mean making a zine out of other people's work, then no, not really. Although so long as the front cover is your own artwork, you could make the inside of the zine a gallery of other artwork that has inspired you etc.

I found if you start with a 7" x 10" piece of paper and fold according to mini-zine template instructions it ends up 2.5" x 3.5" exactly and will slip into a ATC sleeve just like a regular ATC:)

Sounds logical! ;-)

Are we making two separate ones or making two copies of one like most zines?

Sounds like fun!

TangleCrafts 02/27/2010 #

The front of the ATZ is like an ATC - handmade & original; so unless your artwork is digital, you can't really print this bit direct from your pc. But the rest of the zine can be photocopied just like any zine.

Ok, awesome. Thanks!
