Description:

I really want to try one of those creative, scavenger hunt type swaps!

This is my idea...I may need to edit as we go -please let me know what I need to correct-especially you swap-gurus out there willing to teach-I could use a mentor!

back to my idea-I am picturing a sort of story...Think about a table in a corner of your home with a little display on it. This display will be "evidence" that your sweet victorianish Granny was there! (maybe I read too much detective fiction?)

For the swap lets find the following items in thrift stores, antique stores, garage sales, old attics--wherever:

  1. a cool old book that Granny was reading...buy this for the look of it-a little worn but lovingly read and reread-what your Granny reads is up to you!

  2. a pressed hankie that Granny used as a bookmark-sticking out of the pages-is your Granny a lace or embroidery or vintage print kind of lady?

  3. a pair of gloves she slipped off and laid across the book.

  4. Something "personal" she left behind-a cameo? her eyeglasses? a hatpin? a button that came off her dress?-endless options here!

  5. and last something Granny was doing while in that corner- did she leave a bit of handwork (a mostly finished doily and hook? a bit of lace or embroidery?) was she mending ? hemming an apron? playing a little game with a grandchild? writing a letter?(pretty stationary and an old pen or ink well)maybe she was painting a piece of china or having a cup of tea in a lovely cup? anything goes here if you can represent it nicely

The "rules" -keep things nice-vintage looking is a little shabby around the edges-not stinky or trashy-we all know what I mean by this yes?

-we want this to look nice as a display if we choose-so take composition into account too-think still life.

-You write your own Granny story with objects-I do ask that you take your partners profile into consideration enough to not offend them--For example don't have Granny rolling cigarettes and send it to a non-smoker or charting her hog-butchering to a vegetarian. Only include possibly controversial items if you know you are on safe ground (Bible/Koran/The Ball Bluebook Etc) Lets have this mostly be a surprise-a happy one. We all like victorian and vintage things (thats why we signed up here yes?)-so we should mostly be safe.

-extra nice if you write out your story for your partner to read-add what Granny is like-her personality-her clothing etc etc.

Newbies? I will put this in mid April to give you a chance to get some ratings first-go ahead and sign up -but I will pull you off if you don't get 3 mail swaps complete before the date I assign. I will repeat this in another version if it goes well so there will be more chances later too. I will be reading rating of everyone as I decide also--please let me know if you see a known flake sneaking in on my fun swap!

EDITED TO ADD: I did not think about shipping considerations when I wrote this-but I think I need to so this will be USA only with one exception-see comments!

What a cute idea! I can imagine Granny now, sipping her tea while working on a redwork item while sitting at her round table, chatting with a friend. Great idea! I wish i could join but I'm going to be on the road during that time and could send but not do any rating unti June. Too bad for me - but I'll be looking for your next one later in the year. Have fun with this!

I've never done one of these...so you get these things and send them to your partner? What do you mean by composition?

What a fun idea. I had planned to cut back on my swaps for a while
( recently adopted 2 puppies, and have to house break and train them, yes, I am nuts!). But I just could not pass up the fun of this one. Thank you for hosting this!

C-What do I mean by composition?--I am thinking of how the objects look arranged together-like in a painting or picture. For instance -if you put everything in a circle around the book you would say that the composition is circular. What I meant was-choose things that look good all placed together as a display. And yes-i was thinking you get these things (if it looks fun to you) and wrap them up and send them to your partner-then wait for someone elses Granny to come visit you!

F- I am flattered! To have such a full schedule and still find time for a swap takes dedication! Thanks for joining-commited swappers will make this a great one!

About my edit..... I started to get frightened by the possible shipping so I made this USA only. I am going to make 1 exception for the UK swapper who is already signed up--I happen to know she is very very cool and a blast to swap with so she stays! I will send an extra thank-you something or other to whoever is lucky enough to send to her (let me know who you are!)to make up for the extra shipping. OK? I warned you I might not get this right without some editing! :)
