Ever since attending a quilting class several years ago, I have been fascinated with the joining together of geometric units. When I made my [one!] pocket letter, I lovingly made nine ATC-sized doodles with a connected theme ... and then chafed at having to put other things into the pockets :) I wanted to sew those ATC's together, create joints, completely encase each one in its own sewn pocket made of recycled clear plastic bags ... well, you get the idea.

I thought that they would make a great book connected with accordion-style hinges or a panel / miniquilt / wall hanging. Even now, I am thinking about googling other book binding and quilt binding techniques to think about how they could be connected to each other and still fold for mailing. .

Does anyone else obsess about these things, or want to join in on the adventure?

In this swap, we will create at least 4 artist trading cards in the theme of "water," to honor those around the world, from Flint, Michigan, US to Bangladesh, who are affected by a lack of adequate and safe drinking water.. Sender's choice of ATC material (fabric ATC's, plastic ATC's, paper ATC's, needle-felted ATC's, etc.) and media (watercolor, ink, colored pencil, collage, stitching, etc.).. We will then join these ATC's together to create one experimental minibook or miniquilt for one adventurous partner. Sender's choice of binding method.

Thanks for your sense of adventure! Open to all ZMACS members in good standing. I will ATC minibook/ ATC miniquilt all unsent swaps. Image is of a pocket folder accordion book that has pockets for ATC's that Mrs. Amsler, a middle school art teacher, created -- here is her blog post. I found a few images of ATC accordion books, but none specifically of ATC's joined with hinges to make a "quilt".

I can create something around the atc to connect them, do I understand it correct?

Actually, that gives me an idea -- what about punching small holes around the edge and crocheting them together?! I never thought of that one. I was mainly thinking of stitching/ bookbinding type joins and the glued strip hinge joint join I linked to above, or some version of it.

I am also finding mini books with pages joined together with punched holes on the edges of the pages joined with yarn, thread, or metal jump rings (like you use in making jewelry clasps).

Your ideas are original and out of the box, I can imagine it can be hard to give them words. I'll ask if I'm not sure, that's not a problem.

Ok I can be slow sometimes lol, just wanted to double check that I understand this.....so we can either make a connected insert for our ATCs (like the swap image), OR just connect all 4 ATCs together (so they wouldn't be able to be separated into individual ATCs)?

You're not slow, I'm just vague :)

I was envisioning any way to connect the cards together, either in a row (like a mini-book) or in a "quilt" panel like layout (like a pocket letter). In my mind, if you can remove the ATCs from sleeves that are bound together, or whether they are physically bound together was less important than thinking about and actually creating the joining method (pockets or binding). I found a lot more images of artists playing around with the pocket/ folder concept than the directly joined-together format. I guess that I am leaning personally more toward the directly joined together idea, but that doesn't mean that anyone else has to lean that way.

I tend to be more of a "concept" swap host, which can be frustrating at times -- vagueness, you know! :)

Love the idea of concept swaps (definitely not frustrating, actually more exciting!) where everyone makes it how they interpret it...I need more of those in my life to get me out of my paranoid creative box :). My very first thought when I read this was a "Jacob's Ladder" layout...now I just need to try to get some crafting time in so I can commit. I love how you think!

Hooray! Sometimes it is fun to get a little out of the box :) Speaking of getting out, has anyone else read "There are cats in this book" and "There are no cats in this book"? My son loves them and they are so creative!

We did this once in another group with three atcs... I can't remember which group!! It was very interesting. :-) it sounds like fun!!
