Description:

The ATCs you will create for these "Design a..." Series swaps will all be based on a common subject template as a starting point. The template will be different for each swap in the series.

@GeorgeBee got this great "Design a..." idea from here and here.

First you will download the subject template here. You can use whatever means you like to transfer the outline of the image to your ATC. Then, using your hand drawn/painted skills, design your ATC around the template. You will then take a scan or photo of your ATC(s) and upload them to flickr and add them to the group photo pool here.

This swap will be for 2 ATCs to 1 partner. Before you mark your swap as sent, be sure to upload a photo of each of your two ATCs to the flickr pool. This is a requirement of the swap.

*Please note there may be cases where someone might not be able to take/upload their own pictures for whatever reason (library computer, broken camera, exceeded monthly flickr upload quota, etc). In this case, please communicate with me, @crescendo AND your "send to" partner, and we can work out a way to get your photos into the group pool. For example, your partner could photograph your ATCs for you when they receive and also upload them for you, or you can email the photos to me and I will upload them for you, etc. Where there's a will there's a way (and a solution)! I want everyone to be able to participate. Since we are a group of friendly and supportive artists, we get a chance to help each other out. *

Swappers in good standing may apply.

Good job @crescendo

Question:

This template has a bit more detail than the elephant did. Do we need to start with this exact template or just the outline of it? I mean, should our work include all the lines in the pumpkin and stem?

If you would like to omit the inner detail lines and just use the main shape of pumpkin and stem, that is fine. I don't want those lines to inhibit your creativity if they get in your way. I just thought this one had a nice angle/perspective that could be more interesting than just a flat outline. Thank you for the feedback @ellie1200 I will keep that in mind for simplifying future templates.

Oh, I absolutely agree that this is a beautiful pumpkin template! I'm just not sure how to copy the inner stuff....there wasn't as much on the elephant and I could "ad lib" it. I'm sure I'll do at least one of my cards with the lines...they just might not be exactly the same cause it'll likely be freehand. Thanks for the quick answer!

(p.s. I was already "in" regardless! Pumpkins are another favorite!!)

The way I transferred my images last time so that I could use canvas was to print it on a laser printer (print image reversed) and then used one of those little heat tools to iron it on. Its like a soldering iron but has this flat round dealybob tip that heats up and then you iron the back of the laser print to release the toner onto your substrate. Doesn't make the transfer THAT crisp, but I was able to then go over it with black pen to enhance.

Do you guys know the trick where you print the template onto normal printer paper, then turn it over and scribble with pencil all over the area where the picture is situated on the front. Then turn the paper back over, place your ATC blank underneath the paper then trace over the outlines with a sharp pencil on the printed template, which then transfers the graphite onto your ATC substrate. This is like the "poor man's tracing paper" transfer. Of course probably wouldnt work if your background is already painted with acrylic or what not, unless maybe scribbling with china pencil or crayon or something else might work...ooh, maybe crayon would cause a wax resist for watercolor...hmmm. The graphite also works for transferring to scratchboard.
