Description:

How about an ATC swap where you try something different. I have collected scads of ideas as well as come up with some of my own to make ATC’s. I will post a technique, and you get to try something new (or old depending on your experience) and share your results. I am hoping to do this monthly if it is popular.

What is an ATC? http://www.cedarseed.com/air/atc.html An ATC is an artist trading card. The only rule is the size, 2.5x3.5 inchesYou can trade them but not sell them. Don’t forget to put your information and sign them on the back!

June ATC Technique

Four Stamps Challenge by Trish Bayley – configured for ATC cards http://trishbayley.com/2005/june/4stampchallenge.htm

Materials Face Stamp, background design stamp, 2 word stamps, 3 dye ink pads in coordinating colors, black dye ink pad, white or cream piece of card stock

Press each of the dye ink pads several times into the card stock to get a background color, overlap and feel free to leave some white spaces. Next stamp the design stamp randomly onto the card stock choosing one of the three different color ink pads.
Cut your card stock into 10 ATC’s. If you can’t figure out how to get 10 from one sheet of carstock, go here: http://www.ruthannzaroff.com/mirkwooddesigns/tcdiag.htm Then stamp the word stamps randomly over one card at a time using the colored pads. Don’t go too crazy here, two to three stamps is all a little card needs.

Ink up your face stamp and stamp it on your ATC, emboss if you want, add embellishments, etc. Trimming your finished card to allow a 1/8" border and mount on coordinating 3.5 x 2.5 inch cardstock gives it extra umph!

Feel free to experiment and substitute different materials, use a fruit stamp instead of a face, a small heart instead of words, etc. Post about your difficulties and successes, your experiments and your ideas. This is a starting place. Have fun.

This is a technique swap so you can pick your own subject.

You will have 3 partners and send 1 ATC to each. This is international. I check ratings and profiles and will use both to influence who can play. Newbies welcome, people new to ATC’s welcome too. I hope this will give some of those new to ATC's a place to start.

Thank you for hosting this. I had never heard of this technique. Can't wait to use this technique!

oh christine, i'm just full of these things. i made a list and i've got enough to last this year at least into next! everyone's gonna have so many techniques in their pockets there's gonna be some fine ATC's flying through the postal system!! best of all - we're all going to be able to USE all the STUFF we have stashed away! Dianne

A comment about my example, the ink pads i used were from stampin' up, a linen stamp pad which is why mine has texture like it does, sometimes i like that, sometimes i don't. i have already used sponges to pick up the ink and rubbed it onto my paper to give a more muted and smooth finish- but be warned - it takes some shoulder power to do a full sheet of paper and mine is sore from a few cards i did that way last week. Also, the face wasn't standing out enough for me in the one above so i embossed it. you can also see faded faces in the background because the brown ink i used wasn't dark enough, so i overstamped in black pigment ink and embossed it so it would stand out.

Tonight I made my ATCs for this swap. I used the Tim Holz distress ink pads for the 3 colors of ink as they were the only ones I owned with a more muted tone rather than brights or pinks etc. When I had that done I decided to use for my background stamp, those blank foam stamps that you heat up and press into a textured surface to make your own stamp. It was fun as on a spur of the moment whim I used the grating thing on my water cooler (stripes). I then realized the inks were so dark that I'd better use black ink for the word or it would not show up. I made up my own word that I thought went along with the face and the colors of the ink, using one of those stamps where you roll it around to get to the letter you want and it can spell out whatever you want. I then needed the face to really pop so I used black embossing powder for the face.

It was fun and I made 10 of them so now I have more to swap with other people in other swaps.

I just need to finish these off with the background/border part and then I am finished!

This was really fun. Thanks for hosting this!

Well, Christine, thanks for the preview! Christine and I are on another site together and she sent me one of her cards as my Winner Takes All prize and man, are they cool!! I'm going to upload it to the gallery so you can see. Thanks Dianne

FridaKahlo 05/11/2007 #

okay, there is no gallery, do galleries just appear after the swap is closed? Dianne

I love it, I love it, I LOVE it!! Thanks to Christine, who irst introduced this technique to me on a RAK she sent me (thnaks so much Christine!), then thanks to Dianne fot having made this swap so we could learn the technique.....the thanks could go on! I tried it myself last night, using ancient page stamp pads, and a black stayzon pade. I don't have many face stamps, but I found one that I liked, and used that, along with a textured background cube stamp, and a word stamp that just bought at BigLots! My trial cards did not turn out well for actual ATCs for 2 reasons, the first being that I had not cleaned my background stamp before I used it, and when I was inking it up for the background, it got my beautiful melon colored ancient page stamp pad all yucky looking! (I did not see this until I actually stamped the paged, grrrrr!) Then, again, not thinking, I used the black stazon with the word stamp...so I just put the whole pile away, thinking I will use them for background ATC bases. I am going to try again, now that it's daytime, and can see better, and I'll make sure that all my stamps are clean! I have a bunch of stamp pads that are stashed in drawer, so I have plenty to work with. I have a feeling that I'll have a bunch of ATCs using this tecnique soon from experimenting! (I need to work on embossing anyway!) susi

ok, another comment on my newst experiment with this technique, coming from the "breaking the rules" section of the trish bee site. I found a strip of patterned vellum, and stamped the same color pads i used on it last night. Since the vellum already had a pattern, I did not used a patterned stamp. I did have to heat set the ink though, since it did not dry very well. I then cut the vellum down to 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" and stamped my face stamp on with stazon, so wouldn't have to heat set it. Then for the words, I used the making memories magnetic words stamps, but with a black dye ink pad, thinking it would have been a bit lighter than the stazon, but it wasn't. So, out came the heat gun again! I layered thous smaller vellum stamped pieces on complimentary colored ATC size bases with brads. They look nice except i think that the heat made the vellum buckle a bit. Now i am off to try some more with different colors and different stamps. Wish me luck! I like this technique, it gives for a lot of variations, and they all look pretty nice and "arty" like Trish says! susi

This is an awesome idea! I love making "recipe" ATCs, and this is a great swap. Thanks!

LINBUR0100 05/21/2007 #

I used this technique to make my ATCs for this swap this weekend, and while I was at it, I made 20 others and 2 greeting cards! It's great, and yields different results each time.

RaineyDay 05/24/2007 #

I love this technique swap. It got me out of my rut of making all my ATCs too much the same. I'm pleased with the results of my cards for this swap! It was fast, fun and easy. Can't wait to see other results.

groundhogstamper 05/31/2007 #

Mine are completed. What a fun technique. I did make the mistake of stamping with my background stamp before the ink from ink pads was dry. So my "dots" stamped images blended with the background inks and you can't tell I did that step. Still I was pleased with the overall results and look forward to sending them on to my partners.

scrappymuse 06/ 3/2007 #

Ok.. Mine are done.. I just upload the pics. Or you can visit my blog at http://scrappymuse.blogspot.com

I'm sorry you've had to wait, but in order to do my job well, sometimes i have to check up on people that are signed up. I have checked my list, found out who's naughty or nice, and am ready to assign partners. Thanks so much for playing. Now let's get mailing!! Don't forget about the July technique! Dianne

I received more treasure from Redwing 480 on Friday afternoon. Thank you so much!! :) Sorry I didn't let you know sooner but I've been out all weekend gardening and didn't make it to the computer!

Also look out SageWind, gg, and Sherri...your ATCs are in Monday's mail...they are awaiting in my mailbox to be picked up as I write! :)

twobluecrows 06/13/2007 #

I just uploaded to the Gallery two pics of ATCs I've received from Rebecca and Sherri!

For general info about posting pics here--if you make them have a resolution of 72 dpi and the dimensions 2.5x3.5 (Mine are 2" wide because that was simple to do) they will load faster for our viewing pleasure, and not take up too much space on the site. They will also show up in the page without having to scroll up and down to see all the parts. If you need help resizing your pics, e-mail me and I'll help if I can.

Cyn
