Oh, this is a great idea! I've been piddling around with learning Spanish, but this would be a great incentive to study more intensely.

aada 06/ 9/2009 #

fabulous swap idea! i am a native English speaker (with the degree to prove it. haha) and i am getting a BA in Spanish next! ;)

crayolaskiies 06/ 9/2009 #

okay, what if you know a few isolated words like "you're welcome" and "knife" but no grammar whatsoever? because i just acquired a spanish/english dictionary and i need to start studying for my trip to nicaragua :]

user1936 06/10/2009 #

there are plenty of websites that help out with basic grammar. Just do a few searches and perhaps check out a beginning spanish book from your library. All levels of Spanish/English are welcome here. Just try not to type the whole thing into a translator, it doesn't always pick the right words.

Es un idea muy interesante. Buena Suerte!

JeaninMt 06/10/2009 #

Sounds like fun, i don't quite understand the sign in thing before the swap, can you explain ? Thanks

free2flutterby 06/10/2009 #

I like this swap but how can you be sure that the person you get is better than you in Spanish? Are we just trying to practice in general?

free2flutterby 06/10/2009 #

Oh and is it a snail mail or an email swap?

user1936 06/11/2009 #

This is a snail mail swap. The idea is just to practice. Even if you are both beginners in spanish or english you can still get good practice by writing to each other. Just sitting down and looking up words that you want to use is helping you lean the language.

As for the singing in thing it is as simple as it sounds. Sign in to swap-bot at least one week prior to the swap date (the date I assign partners) so visit the site and log in at least once from June 23 to the swap date. Then when I look at your profile it will say that you have been active. If you look at my profile today it will show that the last time I signed in was today.

That is what you see on my account: Original Member Last Online: June 11, 2009 Birthday: May 9

Everyone's LAST ONLINE date must be June 23 or later. Let me know if you have any other questions.

user1936 06/11/2009 #

I forgot to say, that by the swap date your "last online" should read June 23, 2009 or a more recent date

I'm a spanish speaker (native), and I think I have a very accurate english skills... but I would love to enter this! Is it possible? You did say ' All levels of Spanish/English are welcome here'...

Maybe my partner can send a letter with ultra-complicated english words or slang that I may not know?

I would be more than happy to help you guys with your spanish!

user1936 06/16/2009 #

Your partner would more than likely send you a spanish letter since I believe the majority of the people in this swap are english speakers looking to learn spanish. But feel free to join, you could write your letter in either language. As long as your letter is in either spanish or english it will be OK. :)

ChelelosGirl 06/22/2009 #

I speak fluent spanish - I would love to have a penpal to write with in this language, even if it is someone who is just learning!

CayleighTheShell 06/22/2009 #

I'm going to have to drop this swap, but I hope you do it again later cause it is a great idea!

crayolaskiies 06/24/2009 #

ditto, i have to drop as well, but i would love to do this swap later. :)

Adrenaline 06/27/2009 #

hmmm, im so so terrible at spanish. . i've been trying to learn and i'd love to do this but they might get annoyed with how terrible it is lol.. i'm taking spanish in the coming year as a class >.<

LINBUR0100 06/30/2009 #

I'd love to join this swap. I can get by in Spanish farily well as long as I'm talking in present tense only...I've never been able to master my past tense or other tenses in Spanish.

If potential partners are willing to overlook my terrible tenses, I'd really like to participate. Thanks!

aimee 06/30/2009 #

Linbur0100, I'm in the same boat!

I'm nervous because I haven't studied Spanish since the '90s, and I doubt that I was all that great with the language even then! But, what the heck. I'll do it. Maybe I can at least help someone with their English!

aimee 06/30/2009 #

But what happens if a ton of fluent English speakers sign up, and not many Spanish speakers? Or vice versa? Just curiosa!

user1936 07/ 1/2009 #

aimee: Then we all get rough spanish letters. :) The point of this swap is to practice writing a letter in the language we are trying to learn (spanish or english) just the act of writing a letter will help you learn the language. And it is fun to get letters in other languages.

crayolaskiies 07/ 1/2009 #

kay, i'm in again. i'll do my best, haha.

PinkNightmare 07/ 3/2009 #

What's getting me is that according to my book, Spanish pronouns are often understood like Quiero Taco Bell is more accurate than Yo quiero Taco Bell. But since I'm a non-fluent writing to another (presumably) non-fluent do I leave in all the pronouns? I think my letter may come out gibberish when translated!

Great swap idea, though, I'm having fun with it!

user1936 07/ 5/2009 #

I think a student of spanish (or a translator) could figure out most of the verb translations and their pronouns. But some direct/indirect object pronouns might not be as easily understood. Just try to get your letter the best you can do and the other person can always contact you if they have any questions.
