Description:

These are one of my favorite pastime hobbies, but I make them to sell usually. I thought they would also be a fun swap! For this swap, we will be making pendants out of wooden scrabble tiles. You will make TWO pendants for ONE partner. Here are the particulars:

-pendant must be a wooden scrabble tile in good shape.

-pendants must bear the first and last initials of your partner. (one of each initial)

-back of tile must be decopaged or hand-painted in an artistic manner reflecting your partner's likes.

-tiles must have a bail or 'ring' in it to allow for your partner to wear on chain or lacing.

-tiles must be sealed with varnish or mod-podge to protect them and make them waterproof.

This swap is noted as 'challenging' because of the skills and tools required. (optional to drill or glue on your bails with proper glue)

These are incredibly light and easy to mail so I'm making this international.

Serious swappers only with ratings of 5. Newbies welcomed.

Please be sure to create a piece that is truly artwork. Make something you would be proud to receive.

Have fun!!!! Any questions, please ask.

My bails are glued on with super strong glue such as you use for glass pendants, is that ok?

PuddleBugs 11/25/2009 #

Sure! If that works and is pretty secure, that should be fine!

Hmmm watching just now as I don't know if I can source wooden tiles.

I don't think I have the skill level for this but it's a great idea! I bought a few pendants like this off etsy and get compliments ALL the time. If I ever hone my crafting skills enough maybe I'll try this someday.

Best place to find the scrabble tiles is at a second hand store. Up here in Canada the old scrabble games are easy to find at Value Village or Salvation Army Thrift Stores. You can usually pick up a whole game with complete tile set for a couple bucks.

What a fun idea. This is on my watch list for now. I am a bit concerned because what if I don't have my partner's initials?

PuddleBugs 12/ 8/2009 #

Hi grimmlynn; Once the partners are assigned, you will see who you send to, as always. You can take their initials from their mailing address info.

Okay, I think I weirded my question strangely. What if, for some reason, I don't have my partner's initials in my stash of scrabble tiles? I just randomly send and create with them and never really thought about the letter on the back. Could I use a blank tile to create the missing letter(s) if necessary? :-)

PuddleBugs 12/14/2009 #

Hi Grimmlynn; Yes, you can use blanks if you have to.. as long as you don't leave them blank :)

Is a screw in "eye" okay for the ribbon or chain?

PuddleBugs 01/ 6/2010 #

Sure! The wood on the tiles is hardwood.. so you'll have to be sure it is small enough to not split the wood (or pre-drill?) If you've had experience with these (I've never tried the screw in ones...) I'm sure you have it all figured out...!

Thank you! :-)

I'd love to join this but my bag of scrabble tiles is used and they aren't all there and I'm scared I won't have the letters for both of the initials. I saw the post above about a blank tile but I don't even think I have any of those. Any ideas? Or should I just sit out.

PuddleBugs 01/15/2010 #

If you want, druideye, you can join and then see... if it doesn't work in your favor, we can arrange for a partner swap perhaps. I will leave it up to you. I can likely accomodate you.
