About Me

Hi there !

My name is Juliette, I’m 30 years old, and I live in Belgium with my husband and our two cats. I’m a discrete and quite nerdy girl, who enjoys writing, reading and crafting with a nice cup of tea (or coffee !).

I’m a philosophy teacher for children in primary school (which has been a thing in Belgium for the last three years). Working with children can be exhausting at times, but also very challenging (in a good way) : I always have to find new ways to make my class interesting and appealing.

I have always been a stationary addict, collecting way too many notebooks, postcards and Washi tapes for my own good. Discovering the bullet journal system three years ago was a revelation for me : I finally managed to overcome my blank page syndrome, and started to use all the pretty paper goods I gathered over the years.

But now, I want more. Rather than keeping all my creativity locked in a personal journal, I want to share, I want to create for someone else, to discover new aesthetics and techniques, . That’s why I’d love to jump into the wonderful (yet a bit overwhelming) world of mail art, snail mail and swaps.

Favourite crafts

I’m a recycler : I like to gather bits and scraps from magazines, art exhibition flyers, newspapers, cardboard packagings, ephemera, free postcards... anything that catches my eyes and I can stick in my journal.

I love creating things with paper ! I like to decorate my envelopes and my writing paper, and I really have enjoyed making zines lately. Other than that, I dabble in drawing, painting and lettering, without much success, but I still enjoy it !

Things I love

A way too long list of things I love ! It is meant to help my partners getting to know me a bit better, finding ideas for a profile-related swap, or simply picking a conversation starter for a pen pal letter. By no means is this a shopping list.

Colours

Those are the colours I love and frequently use in my personal projects. It doesn’t mean that I hate any other colours (except for those on my dislike list), so feel free to show me what colours YOU love ! * Neutral colours - all greys, all whites, all tans, dull colours, pastels * Dark colours - blacks, navy, indigo, peacock * Bright colours - gold, teal, peach, butterscotch, fern * Fluo colours - just a hint from times to times

Aesthetics/Art forms

  • Minimalism - Although I’m definitely not a minimalist person myself, I absolutely love clean and quiet aesthetics.
  • Geometric - Triangles, straight lines, grids, circles... I love them all !
  • Patterns - I’m a sucker for patterns ! My favourites are traditional Japanese geometric and Art Deco, but I’m also very fond of Bauhaus style, Mid Century, floral, textiles,...
  • Print making and typography - Old or modern, linocut, woodcut, lithography, block printing, screen printing,... I don’t practice any of those arts (although I’m considering learning linocut and stamp engraving), but they’re my favourite.
  • Illustration - I have a big thing for Mid Century illustrations, in any shape or form ! I also like more contemporary styles, watercolours, cute and quirky, black and white, hand drawn style...

Stationery

  • Paper - I’m always on the hunt for pretty papers ! Notepad sheets, lose sheets, sticky notes, scraps, ephemera, cutouts, patterned or plain, heavy or light weight, vintage or new, anything I can use in writing or crafting !
  • Washi tapes - I have a tendency to hoard them, it’s hard to resist. Many of the ones I own at the moment are very simple (plain colours, subtle geometric patterns, florals), but really, I can never predict the next washi I’m gonna fall in love with.
  • Envelopes - I don’t have many (I usually use plain paper craft ones) but I love any kind ! I also love handmade and/or recycled envelopes.
  • Stickers - Like envelopes, I don’t have too many, but honestly, what’s not to like in a pretty sticker sheet ?

Postcards

Ah ! Postcards... I don’t collect them, but I can’t resist a beautiful postcard. I usually use them to decorate my home (I don’t frame them or anything fancy... I just pin them on the wall :)

My favourite themes are : * Mid Century illustrations * Japanese art * Quirky and cute * Typography * Art Deco patterns * Contemporary Art * Vintage science fiction * Vintage advertisements * Hand drawn style illustrations * Space * Weird or inappropriate * Linocut illustrations

Books

I love reading ! My favourite genre is science fiction, but I also love 19th century classics, horror, fantasy and non-fiction (philosophy, sociology, history, political sciences,...).

I’m currently challenging myself to read every science-fiction book mentioned in « How great science fiction works » by Gary K. Wolfe (The Great Courses). It won’t happen over night, as there are about 100 titles listed, but it has been a lot of fun so far !

A few of my favourite authors : Isaac Asimov, Jane Austen, Ray Bradbury, Frank Herbert, H.P.Lovecraft, G.R.R. Martin, William Thackeray, Robert Silverberg, Daniel Keyes, Emily Brontë, Philipp Pullman,...

Things I’m not a fan of / I have no use for

  • Kawaii style - Not really my cup of tea, I’m sure there are many people out there who would enjoy it far more than I would.
  • Loud colours associations
  • Disney, cartoons and anime
  • Touristy postcards
  • Animal pictures
  • Angels
  • Fairies, unicorns, mermaids,...
  • Instant coffee
  • Orange flavoured and chamomile teas
  • Beauty products - I almost never wear makeup and I’m super annoyingly picky about soaps.

Things I would love to receive

  • letters - I love receiving long letters ! If you noticed anything in my profile we have in common, or if you feel we would get along, don’t hesitate to write about it and tell me more about you !
  • poetry - I know close to nothing of english poetry, but if you do, I would be happy to read your favourite poem.
  • recipes - I really enjoy learning about food from around the world ! Feel free to share recipes from where you live, or whatever you like eating !

Comment: Hi Juliette, thanks a lot for your letter and the beautiful envelope. I've been to Paris and to Brussels once but to be honest I didn't like both. And in Paris several people became very unfriendly when they noticed we're from Germany and some even told us to go go back to where we are from. This was really, really strange. My second time in Belgium was in Ghent, where we had really a nice time.
