I was born and raised in Alaska but have also lived in Nevada and New Jersey. I am married to a wonderful, silly, sweet man(Mike) who has only left Alaska twice on short trips so Alaska is definitely home for us. We will celebrate our 10th anniversary this July!
I have always worked with children in some capacity and currently work mainly with two year olds, but I care for all ages(0-12) a few hours each day. I am very young at heart and a bit silly, but appreciate good taste. I kind of resent some things geared towards children that aren’t done well both in the classroom and at home(it bleeds over a bit for me as we tend to like silly happy things in our house). I feel that children deserve beautiful well made things and so the furnishings, materials and music I choose reflect that. That means none of the more obnoxious children’s music and none of that stuff that is just the primary colors plus green. I also am not big on characters, both at work and at home, but if it is well designed I often make an exception especially if it is from something meaningful to me(In fact, one of my favorite pajamas is a fuzzy Mike Wazoski set where the shirt is just green with an eyeball in the middle and little horns). Basically I appreciate good design.
I may come off as a bit silly to some. I like things that make me happy and that often means things that are slightly bold or shaped like other things. Why use ordinary paper clips when you can have paper clips shaped like alligators? Our house has a few stuffed animal friends, or guys, each with it’s own personality. We don’t buy them indiscriminately and our tiny apartment is by no means overrun, but sometimes a guy just has something about it. It doesn’t help that I will occasionally decide not to buy one, only to find it talking or making sounds(voiced by Mike) and following me around the store. I guess the point of that story is that we never really “grew up” whatever that means.
I like making things and always have. Right now my current creative adventure is the gel plate I just bought. Sadly I have only used it twice so far as I need to get some cleaning and reorganizing done in the apartment first, and finding time(and energy) for that has been hard. I enjoy board and card games. I am very lucky to have married into a game playing family, so we get together occasionally to play. I have always enjoyed reading, but don’t do it enough these days.
We definitely watch too much tv. We like light hearted and positive, but also like a bit of drama sometimes. We both think that the over saturation of violence and negativity effect people as individuals and our culture as a whole in not always good ways, but sometimes we get really hooked into things with darker themes despite our reservations (Grimm, Umbrella Academy). We have watched Grey’s anatomy since the beginning and enjoyed both spinoffs. We like We Bare Bears and Steven Universe a lot right now. We are currently watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, The Orville and Speechless together. I like period dramas occasionally. I have been in the mood for silly sitcoms lately especially if there is just the right amount of cheesiness and positive message. I watch a lot of British and Australian shows(mainly comedy, a bit of drama). We tend to like well made family movies and tv: Finding Nemo, Lilo and Stitch, Despicable Me, Hilda, A Series of Unfortunate Events(the series, not the movie).
I like happy bright colors, as well as pastels and jewel tones. I also like natural colors and textures. I guess that means I like all of the colors if used right.
I like most animals themes. Llamas have always been a favorite. I like foxes, rabbits, dinosaurs, mythical creatures, cats, chickadees, anything cute.
Food themes can be fun, especially fruit.
I generally like stars and space. Sky themes as well (clouds, rain, hot air balloons, rainbows)
I have worn glasses since kindergarten(probably needed them all my life) and they are very much a part of my identity, so glasses can occasionally be cute on things.
