About Me

My name is Dakota (I also go by my nickname Ducky - either is perfectly fine!) and I live in the southwestern US. I moved around a lot growing up, but landed here and here I will stay! I live with my husband Thomas (married June 2016) and our pup Westley.

Westley is a 2 year old Blue Heeler (AKA Australian Cattle Dog) and we love him to pieces. He even has his own instagram! He is named after the Dread Pirate Roberts from the movie The Princess Bride, but we call him "Dingo" almost as often as we use his real name. He loves all treats and toys, but soft stuffed toys will be shredded almost immediately.

I don't have any cats because my husband is allergic, but I still do love cats and I cuddle my friends' and family's cats whenever I get the chance.

Aside from crafting, I am passionate about many things!
First and foremost I am passionate about American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. I am an ASL interpreter and learning more every day!
I enjoy making beaded jewelry, and am currently practicing wire wrapping of crystals as pendants! I am getting better.
I enjoy thrifting, especially books - my library is mostly thrifted! I also collect depression glass (my pattern is Anchor Hocking Sandwich, or Indiana Glass Tiara, in primarily clear or amber).
Baking is a relatively new hobby for me, I'm no Mary Berry but I enjoy making cakes, cookies, and breads!

Favorite Books

Currently Reading:
Changeless by Gail Carrigan
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas

The Starless Sea by Erin Morganstern
The Circle Opens quartet by Tamora Pierce

TBR Up Next
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

I am an avid reader (and serial re-reader) and my favorite genres are fantasy and science fiction. Some all-time favorite authors that I am basically always reading at least one book from include:

  • Tamora Pierce (All time fave!)
  • Erin Morganstern
  • JK Rowling
  • Patrick Rothfuss
  • Brandon Sanderson
  • David Eddings
  • JRR Tolkien

A few favorite standalone novels:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Anne Shaffer and Annie Barrows
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

I also read a lot of contemporary fiction, historical novels, and narrative non-fiction. I am trying to read more classic fiction as well!

I worked in bookstores throughout college and I can't ever seem to have enough books. I usually have several books going at once - usually one audiobook for my commute, one "home book" in paper that stays at my house, and one ebook that goes everywhere with me on my Nook.

I am always up for trying out new books recommended by penpals and other friends! If you suggest something it might take me a while to read it but I will eventually, and then we can talk about it!

Favorite Television

My Faves:

  • The Office
  • Switched at Birth
  • Parks and Rec
  • Friends
  • Gilmore Girls
  • Sherlock

Special Circumstances:

  • Supernatural - my mom (badass breast cancer survivor & current MBC warrior) is a HUGE fan and if you want to send something for her I will love you forever

  • Breaking Bad - I have several Breaking Bad postcards bought at the car wash where the main character works in the show, posted from the city where the show is set (Albuquerque, NM) Let me know if you’re a fan and we can definitely swap!

  • Bullet Journaling (started in 2016, have filled 2 so far.)
  • Snail Mail/Papercrafts
  • Beading Jewelry (I only use glass, metal, or stone beads. No plastic)
  • intersectional feminism
  • Harry Potter anything (Go go Gryffindor!)
  • washi tape (I really love samples - flat ones are perfect for my journal pockets)
  • ephemera/cutouts
  • stickers and labels
  • witchy stuff (crystals, incense, herbs, spells)
  • palmistry
  • book recommendations!
  • playlists/music recommendations
  • Anything sign language or Deaf culture related!
  • camping
  • wombats!
  • pet pictures (especially dogs)
  • dogs in general
  • bookmarks
  • journal prompts
  • Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch)
  • recipes (I'm not a skilled cook but will try anything once!)
  • vintage paper
  • calligraphy/hand lettering (better with brush pens, learning to work with paintbrushes, fountain pens and dip pens).
  • information about causes, awareness, rights, supporting others, activism, or breaking down stigmas

  • I prefer postcards naked, stamped and written on
  • I like all colors, especially if it's a well put together color scheme (but I admit I am especially partial to pinks and blue!)
  • I am personally not very religious, so items relating to that would probably be better to send to someone else who will truly enjoy them.
  • I don't have any problems with profanity, dark/scary imagery, or risqué images, so please feel free to include if it fits the swap and floats your boat!
  • Please do not send me books or imagery related to babies or pregnancy.

Comment: Thank you so much for sharing about your mom. She is a BadAss! I also found my first lump doing a self breast exam. And then had three surgeries in the next two years to remove more lumps. I am happy to say I am also cancer free. I'm sure she is so very proud of you. And I will wear the bracelet in honor of her, and everyone else that has been affected by breast cancer. Hopefully cures will be found soon.
Response: I am so glad you liked her story - I think she is a badass too! I am so happy to hear that you are cancer-free as well! Thank you again for hosting this wonderful swap!
