Description:

I think this is the perfect group to have a series of swaps, where by the end we will each have a lovely deck of inspiration cards with some made by each swap participant. For each swap, we will use a predetermined number of playing cards. Paint the playing cards however you desire. You may have to lightly sand the surface if they are slippery to help the paint adhere. The use of Gesso will also help the paint stick. You can add some bits of collage elements keeping in mind that we don't want the cards too bulky. They should be somewhat flat. After you have decked out (pun intended) your set of playing cards, either print out or using found text, add a different inspirational quote to each card. You may coat each card with gel medium or similar coating for added protection.

We will end up with a deck of 52 cards at the end of the series.

For this swap we will paint and decorate 4 playing cards. Since this isn't really profile based, you may make your cards before partners are assigned.

Have fun!

Hi, I love this idea! Should both sides of the card be painted?

SFreer 06/ 5/2014 #

Hi @zoev1975 yes, both sides of the cards are painted and decorated.. If you google inspiration decks, there are some incredible examples out there.. :)

dobie256 06/10/2014 #

I have a deck of cards. They measure 2.25" x 3 3/8". I consider them a bridge deck which is pretty common now.

Is that the size everyone is using?

SFreer 06/10/2014 #

I will measure what size my deck is.. I'm sure that sounds about right.. I will get back to you.

SFreer 06/10/2014 #

Just so you all know, the quotes don't have to be all mushy and inspirational either.. You can use just some thought provoking phrase or whatever.. I am not too big into the heavy duty cutesy quotes that seem to run amok lately but sometimes some thoughtful phrase is cool.. I hope that makes sense. :)

SFreer 06/11/2014 #

@dobie256 I have decks of at least two sizes.. One is 2.25 x 3.5, the other slightly larger. I will have to measure other decks.. I think for the purpose of this swap, we can go with those that are known to be a typical bridge deck.. I have a couple of those I think.. There seems to be several slight variations..

SFreer 06/11/2014 #

I'm thinking I should cancel this swap and maybe try it again at a later date?? There are watchers but a lack of participants.. Feedback?

dobie256 06/11/2014 #

I just sent you an email. But I will respond here too. I love the idea of this swap! I want to make sure I have the right sized cards (or know it doesn't matter) and maybe get a few made up in advance of the series starting. I love a series but want to make sure I can keep up. I would like to see at least 4-5 participants so we get a nice mix of artistic styles. I would prefer postponing the swap for a SHORT amount of time in order to get more participation.

I have a deck of casino cards (2.5x3.5) that I have already started altering and painting.

zoev1975 06/12/2014 #

I love the idea, but to be perfectly honest I am slightly intimidated by the artist talent I see on members of the group, I haven't tried altering playing cards before, and wouldn't want to let anyone down if mine aren't quite up to scratch. I think I need to practice first and would maybe join a later swap

dobie256 06/12/2014 #

Zoe don't worry about it. Join in and have fun. Challenge yourself - that is what matters. This is a friendly group! :) OK I rounded up a bicycle deck and am heading down to my workshop. One more question -- we make these WITHOUT holes, right? If people want to put their's on a ring they can do that themselves, right? I would prefer mine without holes.

HippieChick 06/12/2014 #

@zoe1975 I've never done this before either. We all have to start someplace! And besides, you only get better if you try.

dobie256 06/12/2014 #

OK I have my cards started and I am having fun. One MORE question before I sign up -- you say in the description use type that is printed out or found. Are we limited to that? My printer is dead and I have a bunch of rubber stamp quotes I thought I'd use (in addition to found text and perhaps some hand-writing). If those aren't allowed that is perfectly fine I just need to be sure I can fulfill requirements. Thanks!

SFreer 06/13/2014 #

Sorry I missed some questions! Yes, you make these without holes.. If our partners want to punch holes then that's up to them. And yes, it's perfectly acceptable to use rubber stamps for the quotes.. And the quotes don't necessarily have to be deeply profound...they can be funny, they can be one word wonders, or whatever! Lastly, please don't be intimidated! No one here will judge your art.. We all started someplace! Lets just have fun! :)

Since you are all friends, I hope it is safe to say that all skill levels are welcome in all swaps here.

I, for one, am not the least bit artistic (crafty maybe, but definitely not an artist). When trying a technique or medium totally new to me, I find it helps to let my partner know that.

TerryF 06/13/2014 #

@SFreer and I posted simultaneously. lol

SFreer 06/13/2014 #

Lol! I have also extended the dates by about a week.. Maybe give people a little more time to think and play a little before they commit. :)

Paige1900 06/13/2014 #

I think this is a wonderful idea...it just isn't a good time for me to make such a commitment. The thought of making 6 cards is scary...but it is probably because I am not feeling very artistically motivated as of late. :(

SFreer 06/13/2014 #

@Paige1900 Maybe I should lessen the amount to 4? Would that help? I didn't realize it but your right, maybe 6 is too many for some people.

SFreer 06/14/2014 #

Edited number of cards to 4. If you feel like doing more, then by all means go ahead, but the minimum is now 4.

Paige1900 06/17/2014 #

Okay I gave this ALOT of thought and I am going to join...I never really like doing Altered Playing Cards, but this seems different.

SFreer 06/17/2014 #

I'm glad you joined @Paige1900 These are different.. You don't need to leave a corner showing and these are flat.. Paint, collage and other flat mediums work best.. And as for the quote part, it can be whatever.. Even just one word.. Such as peace, or smile.. When they are done, they look pretty cool.. :)

dobie256 06/17/2014 #

I've never done altered playing cards either -- these do seem very different. I have a bunch started and a bunch more ideas. I am having fun with this swap. Mine are winding up flat, but thick/sturdy. I am excited to get a deck of cards together from lots of different people. What a nice source of inspiration and happy thoughts.!

Paige1900 06/20/2014 #

I bought my playing cards today!!!

SFreer 06/20/2014 #

@dobie256 sounds awesome.. I'm so glad your having fun with it! :) @Paige1900 yea! I'm glad you joined! I'm sure you will enjoy it! I'm using an old deck I have already... These are so fun to make and each person does them so different.. I whole deck made from several different people will be so cool!

dobie256 06/26/2014 #

Good golly but I am having fun making these cards. Have the first set done and am working ahead on a set for next time!
