Description:

Ok, here on Swap-Bot I see a lot of mention of ATC's (Artist Trading Cards). I had no idea what it was so I did a little research - and thought - hey, how bout' a swap for newbies like me who really don't know what they are doing but would love to get the experience and at least try! :)

For this swap you will only send 1 ATC to 1 partner since we're all still learning and I myself don't want to get overwhelmed! :)

Now, here's some details:

Artist trading cards are 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches, and should be flat enough to slide into a standard trading card sleeve.

The dimensions of the card must be 2.5 x 3.5 inches (64 x 89 mm). The back of the card typically includes the artist's signature, the date, and any other info you like to share. (Some artists like to make a personal calling card with a self portrait on the front and contact information and anything else they'd like to include on the back, to give out with their trades.)

Artist Trading Cards are typically made on a base of card stock. However, ATCs have been created on metal, stiffened fabric, plastic, clay, balsa wood, leather, embroidery canvas, acetate, heavy watercolor paper, and many other materials.

Various techniques are then applied to the chosen substrate: collage, textile arts, assemblage, digital art, calligraphy, beadwork, watercolors, rubber stamps, carved soft block stamps, pen and ink, colored pencil, airbrush, and many others.

I'm leaving the swap open to join until the end of the month and giving us all two weeks after the deadline to get your swap out.

Please message me if you have any questions at all! Hopefully I remembered everything as this is my first time coordinating! LOL

Happy Swapping!

Additional notes from Monteverde1997 - Thanks!

There are several ways to send ATCs. First after making an ATC, I back it with an old playing card.(Like a deck of cards you play rummy with) Then I put another piece of paper on the back so that it looks nice. You are trying to make it durable. You can Use heavy duty cardstock to save you a step if you want.

On the back you can buy a stamp for ATCs or put the info on there yourself. Here is the usual info included on the back: (Your name, What you go by here on swap-bot, where you are from, name of the swap, Title of your ATC, the date it was made, and a line titled "Info" meaning how many ATCs did you make " 1 of 1" or "2 of 3" etc. Some people include their address and email information.

To send the ATC you can put it in between cereal box cardboard and put it in the envelope or just send it inside of a card. Sometimes people include a note describing the ATC or the technique used or that you read that persons profile and made it just for them. I have learned the hard way that sending it with out some kind of protection card, cardboard etc. could result in it being damaged. I also put on the outside of the envelope "non-machineable" which means that the envelope will need to be hand stamped by the post office and not run through their machine. This is an extra 20 cents but after having your hard work shredded in their machine it is worth it. For extra hearts you can send goodies for the reciever to use to make ATC of thier own..

hi I am Interested as I have just recently made A ATC and now I want to make more!!!

BrauerGirl 03/21/2009 #

I just signed up. I've been having trouble finding ATC swaps to participate due to my being a newbie~I need partners and ratings! :o) I'm super excited to be in this one! Thanks for hosting! BTW, where would I find the standard trading card sleeve to put my ATC card in?

marlynnp 03/22/2009 #

Yay! I'm so glad to see an ATC swap for newbies also!!!

dreamgrlsd 03/23/2009 #

@BrauerGirl I found my ATC sleeves at Walmart. They cost around a dollar. I know you can also get them at a store that sells trading cards and comics. :o)

Omidnight 03/24/2009 #

I just signed up! When you send an ATC, do you usually send it with a sleeve? thanks!

mystic69 03/24/2009 #

As this is my first time making an ATC, I'm not sure what people "usually" do - I did not state that it HAD to be sent in a sleeve - just that it could fit in one - but I would probably suggest sending it in a sleeve so that it doesn't get messed up in sending.

A lot of people think that ATCs have to be mixed media--meaning collages with stickers, images, ribbons, brads, etc (embellishments).

NOT!

I'm jumping on my little bandwagon here to educate beginners that ATCs mean Artist Trading Cards and can be made of any art medium you like to do!

Mixed media is very popular, but...

They can be paintings in oils, or acrylics, drawings or sketches, photographs, digital art, stained glass, polymer clay, mixed media collages, needlepoint, blackwork embroidery, crewel embroidery, quilted fabric pieces, woven paper or fabric or ribbon, brown paper collage, monotypes, monoprints, linoprints, lithographs, pastel paintings, crayons, conte crayon drawings, rubberstamp art, woodcarvings, macaroni art, beeswax collage, UTEE pieces, colored pencils, watercolor, and so on, and so on, and so on.

There really is no limit except the requirements of the swap host, and the dimensions: 2.5" x 3.5".

The point is to share little pieces of yourself in the form of a small piece of your art. Have fun with it!

This is a cool idea for a swap. I see it's already generated interest. I'm putting it on my watchlist, to join once I know I'm not overextended. But I hope you'll have more in the future.

craftygal87 03/27/2009 #

I am excited about this swap! Please, who ever gets me as a partner...look over my profile good and check out my favorites on Etsy.com to get ideas of what I like. Thanks! :)

If our ATCs have glued on embellishments, it's helpful to put a little piece of felt or foam packing sheet over the embellished side before putting it into the card you may send with it, and all inside a padded envelope with "Hand Stamp" or "non-machinable" on it--if it's more than 1/4" thick you'll have to send it as a large envelope/package anyway, so put it in a padded one for safekeeping.

I use heavy (110lb) cardstock for most of mine (Hammermilland Georgia Pacific make it this heavy), and use my 2.5" Xyron (best use yet for my 50% Michael's coupons!) to make a strip of cardstock labels to attach to the backs for extra sturdiness and easy labeling if I use black or dark card for the main card part.

For labeling the backs of ATCs made of polymer clay, glass, plastic or wood, etc., I use paint pens in an appropriate color.

I am glad this is for one ATC only.

twobluecrows 03/28/2009 #

Don't be intimidated by all the possibilities! An excellent ATC can be as simple as a basic watercolor painting on a piece of good watercolor paper, or a photograph, sized and adhered to a piece of cardstock, or a drawing on a piece of paper, glued to a piece of cereal box! Just make it really something from you!

When will we receive our swap names? I'm ready to go! :o)

Upcountrysmiles 03/29/2009 #

I'm waiting for my partners to be assigned - it's the 28th already!!

craftygal87 03/29/2009 #

I'm still waiting for my swap partners name....and it's March 29th. Maybe you should extend the time these should be sent out.

twobluecrows 03/29/2009 #

The host hasn't signed in since the 27th, maybe she doesn't realize she has to click on something to Assign Partners. Hopefully she'll sign in soon.

craftygal87 03/30/2009 #

When she does sign in, she should extend the time for when it should be sent out.

Jananini 03/30/2009 #
