Description:

Back by popular demand... Okay, ONE person asked for a repeat, but that's good enough for me!

It's so much fun to sew with vintage linens. I love the idea of making something cool from "nothing", and I love that retro/shabby look. There are so many possibilities!! Here are a few links to get you inspired:

In this swap, you'll have 3 partners. You'll take one sheet (twin size or larger), cut it into 4 equal pieces, send one piece to each of your partners and keep the last one for yourself. So when we're done, you'll have four different pieces to create with.

The specifics:

  • The sheet needs to be at least twin-sized (approximately 66 x 96 inches), so the pieces you send to your partners will be at least approximately 33x48 inches (about a yard of fabric). You can cut off the hems if you like.

  • Please only use FLAT sheets, as they will be in better condition than fitted ones.

  • You can use 100% cotton or a cotton/poly blend, but no flannel, jersey, satin, silk, etc.

  • Please only use sheets that are in good condition. Some fading and wear is to be expected, but carefully inspect the pieces you send out to make sure there are no holes, stains or very worn spots that would make them unusable.

  • The color/print is wide open (except no solid colors!), but obviously you should choose something you personally like! Let's try to stick to the 50's-60's-70's era. Check out the links above for some great examples. Please do not request specific prints or color schemes for yourself, since it will be impossible with multiple partners.

  • EDITED TO ADD: Please do not "forward" items within this swap. If one of your partners sends early, do not pass along their item to someone else in this swap. With multiple partners, there is a real chance that someone will end up with a duplicate, and that is just no fun. It would also be best if you didn't forward items from the previous round of this swap, for the same reason. There's no way to check or enforce that, so it's not mandatory, but it would be much more in the spirit of the swap to send "new" items to your partners. And it shouldn't be difficult - find a sheet, cut it up, send it out! :-)

Participants:

  • This will be US/Canada only this time, in case there were folks who stayed out last time because of postage concerns. (If someone else wants to host an international version, you're totally welcome to copy this swap).

  • You must have at least a 4.8 rating, with at least a few snail-mail swaps and no unexplained 1s. I will allow newbies, if you PM me ahead of time and have a filled-out profile.

  • I will angel if needed, but I sure hope it won't be!

Yeay! I didn't join in the last one and felt a bit bummed after it slipped by...now I'm in!

Samantha reminded me to mention - if you guys have links (pictures or blogs) to the projects you have made with the fabrics from this swap, please share! I'll start - here's a link to the zig-zag quilt I'm making. I'm loving it!

This is too cool to pass up. I have been bugging my packrat mother to let me raid her stuffed-full closet for ages, I think maybe I'm gonna go for it! I think she still has some sheets from when she was married in 1972. Wondering if 80's prints would count if they're fun enough--perhaps those swirlygirly florals aren't as punchy as the 70s wow flowers, but still interesting.

Vintage sheets keep making it home with me, too! I look forward to sharing the textile love...

I found a couple of sheets at my local charity thrift store, but they kind of smell like a charity thrift store. I washed them in hot water but the smell is still there a bit. Anyone have ideas about how to get the smell out? I have them soaking in a bath of cool water and baking soda right now...

lizziwhizz 05/ 5/2009 #

baking soda bath seemed to work!

sweetavalanche 05/ 5/2009 #

Ah, that's an idea I'll have to remember!

I am interested in this, but I think I am missing something...what is PM? And angel...what is that? sweetavalanche, I will PM you as soon as I find out what it is!

lizziwhizz 05/ 6/2009 #

Ellama1-PM is Private Message. You can click on sweetavalanche's name above and see her profile, and there will be a button that says "send message" or something to that effect.

Thank you lizziwhizz. Now, I will be crossing m' fingers!

sweetavalanche 05/ 9/2009 #

Okay, partners are assigned! If you haven't found your sheet yet, get shopping! :-)

InjeraMuncher 05/13/2009 #

I had a sheet sitting in my collection and am pleased to be able to share it. Looks like someone sewed a simple tube at the top to use it as a curtain, which makes TOTAL sense since the print is fabulously jungle-y!

Ellama1 05/15/2009 #

I got two of my sheets and I love them!
