About Me

I teach Latin and ancient Greek at a small college. In my leisure time I enjoy kayaking, reading novels, taking pictures, and sending mail-art.

I'm especially interested in:

  • 19th century British literature

  • art history, art museums, and art postcards

  • photography

  • Shakespeare

  • vintage illustrations of fairies

  • wildflowers

  • birds

  • architecture

  • poetry

  • children's literature

  • images of the sky, or water, or trees

  • word art of various sorts (centos, found poems, creative anagrams, etc.)

  • asemic and abstract art

There's something I enjoy about every color.

I hesitate to list any particular dislikes, but here's one: I'd prefer not to receive any images related to hunting, fishing, or eating meat.

Favorite Movies

The Man Who Came to Dinner, Evil Under the Sun, The Women (1939 version), House of Flying Daggers, I Heart Huckabees, Ushpizin, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Stranger than Fiction, About a Boy, Being Julia, They Came Back (Les Revenants), Meek's Cutoff.

Favorite Books

For pleasure reading, I usually stick to novels. My favorite authors include Anthony Trollope, Wilkie Collins, E.M. Forster, Angela Carter, Charlotte Brontë, Jane Austen, and Henry James.

Favorite Crafts

Photography, embroidery, basic book-binding, writing and translating (I think they count as crafts), and making mosaics, collages, and abstract designs out of paper scraps.

About Swapping

This probably goes without saying, but please let me know if you haven't received something from me when you should have--I haven't dropped the ball so far, and I'd like a chance to re-send if something got lost in the mail. And I promise to rate my partners in a timely way, too.

SuMay rated for Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face! on Jan 18, 2017
Comment: Thank you for these precious works of art. 1 of 2: I love the title you chose: "sprung tune". Description and erasure poem in one, how clever! I also like the combination of booklet and leperello binding and the scrumptious creamy paper. 2 of 2: Another intriguing idea, brilliant! I like R and T best; both are poems in their own right. Thank you for these utterly charming items. You are a true artist.
Response: Thank you so much for these kind words--they made my day! And, of course, I'm so happy you enjoyed the booklets!
Nnyla rated for PC Swap: Autumn Has Flowers Too! on Nov 10, 2016
Comment: Thanks for the autumn flower postcard! I'm at work, but I think it was a type of orchid, right? or lily? Anyway, of course, I loved it. I reminded me of a photo you'd sent to me a couple of years ago. Thanks, too, for joining in!
Response: Yes, it was a member of the orchid family! One of our neighbors knows a lot about Arkansas wildflowers, and she was really impressed that I came across one. It's the first year either Chris or I had seen them, so I'm wondering if they're fickle bloomers or if we'd just not noticed them before because they are so small and delicate.

Tearryn rated for Your Photo of the Month (October) on Dec 1, 2015
Comment: I fell in love with your photography the moment I saw it! Would love to talk to you more on how you took these beautiful pictures, Bec!
Response: Thanks so much, Tearryn! I'm not a trained or technically clued-in photographer, so for me it's lots of trial and error as I learn how to hold my camera in such a way to catch the play of color and light as if the water or a wet window were a kind of canvas. It brings an element of chance to the enterprise--I'm never really sure if I'm going to "get" something or not....
Comment: Now I know why you are the coordinator for these swaps: your work is stunning. Many thanks.
Response: Oh, thank you very much for these kinds words, Lisa!

It was the second clue that tipped me off. And then the other two sounded more familiar. I am jealous of you secret garden, most of our flowers are gone.

I have a flickr account if you want to choose a photo or I can surprise you! www.flickr.com/photos/kaikamahine12. Aloha, Dana
