About Me

I'm 45, married, and have a 16-year old daughter and 13-year old son.

Things I do for my soul: * Send long chatty letters and other happy mail * Art journal * Keep a written journal * Draw * Collage * Cook and bake * Sew, mostly quilting * Garden

Favorite Books

  • Art instruction books (Art journaling, sign-painting, colour theory, etc.)
  • Cookbooks (Food from scratch, basic cookbooks, and specific ones like slow-cooker)
  • Personal development (Relentless, 4 Hour Work Week, Living More with Less)
  • Biography (Jenny Lawson, Russell Brand, Anne Lamott)
  • Spirituality
  • Fiction/mysteries (John Sandford, John Connolly, Lee Child)

Favorite Crafts

I sketch, art journal, make mail art, keep a written journal, and I also paint with acrylics and watercolours. I'm trying my hand at illustration lately too. I have several favourite thrift shops where I pick up vintage papers and fabrics and all kinds of stuff that makes me happy and find their way into my work. My daily journal is a Seven Seas blank book filled with Tomoe River paper and I'm still tweaking how I use it.

My Favourite Things

  • Interesting or hand-drawn typography (found or created)
  • Doodles and sketches (yours, someone else's, something you found on the ground at the bus stop...)
  • Hand-carved stamps
  • Cassette tape imagery / mix tape
  • Old skeleton keys
  • The unusual, the weird, the inappropriate
  • Interesting obituaries
  • Rub-ons
  • Sketchnotes
  • Cigar labels
  • Make me laugh - the less appropriate the better.
  • Superhero stuff (especially Wonder Woman and Batman)
  • Paper goods: envelopes, notecards, Cavallini paper goods and stickers, labels, onion-skin paper
  • Cirque du Soleil style
  • Skulls (real ones, not sugar skulls)
  • Octopuses (octopi?)
  • Getting mail in re-used envies
  • Colorful or unusual salvaged postage stamps
  • Graffiti
  • Magazine articles that grabbed you so much that you just had to share with someone (share with me!)
  • Steampunk
  • Washi tape, especially if it features numbers or letters
  • Typewriters & typewritten stuff
  • Vinyl stickers
  • Collage stuff - interesting pictures, bits of typography, patterns, textures, anything you think is too nice to throw out
  • Daily ephemera - I use these in my journal, and don't worry if it's got a footprint or other sign of use on it. If you think it looks cool, then I probably will too.
  • Vintage ephemera yummm
  • Stationery for writing letters
  • Personal, chatty letters
  • Favourite colour is orange; but I also love neutral palettes; or colourful things; or analogous colours (side by side on the colour wheel); or complementary colours (across from each other). Yep. I like colour.

Comment: Thank you for the great items. Such a wide variety. My only note would be next time, make sure I can open the envelope without destroying it :( It was beautiful and I wanted to save it with the many others I have gotten that I liked. Other than that one thing, great job!

Comment: Thanks for your very nice transfers. I like them a lot. And also thank you for so much deli paper. I use it on the gelli plate, and you can't buy it in the Netherlands. That was very nice from you.

Comment: what an awesome card! I love every inch of it, such a delightful treasure. I'd reblog it on Tumblr in a milsec if it showed up on my dashboard. haha. Yes, we do have toilet seats, although we use the European style toilets which lets you examine the result before flushing down. My American flatmate jokes a lot about it, especially after I returned from NYC and I detailed her how shocked I was with that lake I had to sit over. I actually tried avoiding to use it for as long as possible, because I was afraid it might feel like making a cup of tea or it splash back and waters the rose...
Comment: Thank you for this fine piece of Everyday Ephemera. I love it all, the Crochet&Knitting part is my favorite!!

Comment: Thanks for the awesome envie and goodies! I loved the little note you included! Now to figure out the Braille message...
Comment: Dear Shelley, thank you so much for the goodies and the wonderful envie!!!
Comment: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I love every thing about this envelope! Your writing is amazing and I loved the stories, your sense of humour sounds just like mine - especially when it comes to kids! Its our 31st Anniversary tomorrow and I'm going to use your card. The stamps, the envelope - I had a shitty day today, but you made it a great night! Thank you 😀
Comment: Thank you for all the goodies, I loved the clear envelope! Happy Swapping!
Comment: Your letter was so warm and touching, it made me feel like we knew each other before. Yes, it is so unforgiving for quilters to sew paper, but I LOVE it. And I don't like quilting so much. I admire the results, but I am not able to do it,I am afraid. Something inside me wants to go in another direction than required for the perfect quilt. Maybe it's lack of skill, I like to think it's creativity calling. Your envelope and its contents are just perfect, very thoughtful. Thank you many 💙💜💛❤💚💕
Comment: I LOVE LOVE LOVE what you sent! All of the tissue is awesome, but the one with all the vintage images is too die for! I looked up all the illustrators you mentioned, and I loved them. My favorites were the Brothers Hilts, and Oliver Jeffers I believe. I do think I may have to include some of their art in my journal! To answer your question, I use other people illustrations and pieces of the story they are from to create the pages. I can not draw at all, but I have a creative mind, and love to collect things that make me happy. I adore the whimsical nature in children's book illustrations thus decided to create a journal filled with them!

No worries at all! I am trying to keep up with Write_On this month, if I owed you a letter I would be all over that 💩.

Pssssst. Do I owe you a letter? Or were you absconded by the minions devoted to the Goddess of Canning?

You asked to see this. I would have printed it out and sent it with my letter, but SOMEONE used all the printer ink printing out dumb shit (it was me. I did it.)

I should have written the watermelon rage while it was still fresh. Today the remains were tossed, arguments about my patented new way to eat watermelon linger. (Life hack: just cut the fucker in half, put one half in your lap like a bowl and scoop it out with a giant serving spoon, eat.)
Look forward to hearing about the messes you're cleaning up, assuming that's super secret spy talk. I'll have my decoder and black light at the ready.

oblivionspin on Jul 14, 2016:

Did I um... send you the last letter I thought I sent you, or did I imagine it? I'm in a cranky mood and seriously considering having a few drinks so I can write you an angry letter about the giant ass watermelon that is taking up half my fridge.
