About Me

I'm 43, married, and have a 14-year old daughter and 11-year old son.

Things I do for my soul: * Send long chatty letters and other happy mail * Art journal * Keep a written journal * Draw * Collage * Go to life drawing night (aka naked drawing night) * Cook and bake * Plan out imaginary houses * Keep a vegetable garden; can and preserve

Favorite Books

  • Art instruction books (Art journaling, sign-painting, colour theory, etc.)
  • Cookbooks (Food from scratch, basic cookbooks, and specific ones like slow-cooker)
  • Personal development (Relentless, 4 Hour Work Week, Living More with Less)
  • Biography (Jenny Lawson, Russell Brand, Anne Lamott)
  • Spirituality
  • Fiction/mysteries (John Sandford, John Connolly, Lee Child)

Favorite Crafts

I sketch, art journal, make mail art, keep a written journal, and I also paint with acrylics and watercolours. I'm trying my hand at illustration lately too. I have several favourite thrift shops where I pick up vintage papers and fabrics and all kinds of stuff that makes me happy and find their way into my work. I use a Hobonichi Techo planner for my daily to-do list and my regular journal right now is a Pentalic sketchbook.

My Favourite Things

  • Interesting or hand-drawn typography (found or created)
  • Labels/stickers/journal cards that I can use to put the date in my journals, either blank or with days of the week, or months of the year
  • Cool packaging design
  • Doodles and sketches (yours, someone else's, something you found on the ground at the bus stop...)
  • Hand-carved stamps
  • Cassette tape imagery / mix tape
  • Old skeleton keys
  • The unusual, the weird, the inappropriate
  • Interesting obituaries
  • Rub-ons
  • Sketchnotes
  • Waxed linen thread
  • Cigar labels
  • Make me laugh - the less appropriate the better.
  • Superhero stuff (especially Wonder Woman and Batman)
  • Paper goods: envelopes, notecards, Cavallini paper goods and stickers, labels, onion-skin paper
  • Cirque du Soleil style
  • Skulls
  • Octopuses (octopi?)
  • Getting mail in re-used envies
  • Colorful or unusual salvaged postage stamps
  • Graffiti
  • Magazine articles that grabbed you so much that you just had to share with someone (share with me!)
  • Fountain pens & inks
  • Steampunk
  • Typewriters & typewritten stuff
  • Vinyl stickers
  • Collage stuff - interesting pictures, bits of typography, patterns, textures, anything you think is too nice to throw out
  • Daily ephemera - I use these in my journal, and don't worry if it's got a footprint or other sign of use on it. If you think it looks cool, then I probably will too.
  • Vintage ephemera yummm
  • Stationery for writing letters
  • Used teabag paper - I don't drink tea but I love using the tea-stained paper in my journal
  • Personal, chatty letters
  • Favourite colour is orange; but I also love neutral palettes; or colourful things; or analogous colours (side by side on the colour wheel); or complementary colours (across from each other). Yep. I like colour.

Comment: Thanks for another amazing and hilarious letter 😋 You also sent me one for the January IU Stream of Consciousness with crazy pet antics and a new washing machine. I think you'll be just fine but should consider sending the daughter to boarding school. And I like hedgehogs as well as dogs but I'm not sure I could justify cancer surgery. My friends just got their four year old daughter a pet hedgehog, super cute but no wiener dog 🐶. Have a great week, Nathan
Response: You're always so kind! Thanks for enjoying my long-winded diatribes. I'm definitely going to look into boarding schools. There's one only one province away!! Far enough to get her out of my hair, close enough that she can come home for Easter and Christmas. ; )

Comment: Yikes! I just saw that this wasn't rated! I loved your letter and your goodies and the envelope you made. Thanks so much :-)
Comment: Thanks for the great letter and bookmark with cool packaging 😊 The end of the letter with the pet mishaps was so funny 😂 I was going to die. I glad I wasn't the responsible adult having to deal with the aftermath. I took a quick basic free test and it said I was ISTJ. Seemed pretty accurate with the possible exception of responsible. I would say I'm pretty responsible but when I went out shopping with a friend yesterday, her four year old daughter asked to stay next to me in a store full of breakable antiqued but she said that wasn't a good idea as I wasn't a responsible adult. 🙁 My New Years resolutions of actually going on a date this year (hasn't happened the last couple years) and getting outside more have gone nowhere so far but it's still early. Hopefully you are doing better with yours. Anyways, have a great week, Nathan ❤🐶
Comment: Shelley! I love your bucket list and thank you for sending the DW bookmark and postcard. I'm going to put a letter to you in the mail this week!
Comment: I absolutely loved your letter and you could have written your To Do at the end, it would have been charming :)! But I already love the other things you told me. Thank you so much.
Comment: Hi, Shelley! Thanks so much for your letter and the extras! I loved reading your letter and the drawings you included about your ideas for an adjustable easle. Did your son ever end up building it? Lol :)

No worries at all! I am trying to keep up with Write_On this month, if I owed you a letter I would be all over that 💩.

Pssssst. Do I owe you a letter? Or were you absconded by the minions devoted to the Goddess of Canning?

You asked to see this. I would have printed it out and sent it with my letter, but SOMEONE used all the printer ink printing out dumb shit (it was me. I did it.)

I should have written the watermelon rage while it was still fresh. Today the remains were tossed, arguments about my patented new way to eat watermelon linger. (Life hack: just cut the fucker in half, put one half in your lap like a bowl and scoop it out with a giant serving spoon, eat.)
Look forward to hearing about the messes you're cleaning up, assuming that's super secret spy talk. I'll have my decoder and black light at the ready.

Did I um... send you the last letter I thought I sent you, or did I imagine it? I'm in a cranky mood and seriously considering having a few drinks so I can write you an angry letter about the giant ass watermelon that is taking up half my fridge.
