Description:

Have you ever received an ATC that you just didn't like? Maybe it was poorly made, maybe the image on it just wasn't you, maybe the theme just didn't match your personality? Well this is a swap where you will each have one partner that you send an ATC to that you received from someone else that just isn't your cup of tea, and you will also send your partner an ATC based on their profile.

This is my second time running this swap and I was asked this question the first time I hosted this swap and the answer I gave follows. Please feel free to ask me anymore questions.

"Should we leave the name of the "artist" on the back?"

To me art is supposed to be judged, some art I like and some art I don't like. What I'm hoping is that an ATC I received and didn't like someone else (hopefully my partner) will appreciate. It is up to you if you would like to cover up the name on the back of the ATC, but by doing that you will also not be giving the artist of that ATC their "due" in my opinion. In the original artist's opinion it was worthy of being sent out so I don't think they would care if you kept their name on the back.

As I understand it (and believe), the original artist's name should remain on the back - s/he did the work and created the ATC. No other piece of art ever has the "name" changed just because ownership changes...that would be called plagiarism (taking credit for someone else's work).

I don't think people were going to "change" the name but rather just take the name off of the ATC because they didn't want anybody's feelings to get hurt and things like that.

I remember showing my collection to a friend and they actually liked the card that I thought was the worst I'd ever received. I keep it to remind myself not to be so critical of the work I do. I always try my best and love what I send out- but maybe someone else doesn't think it's so great. That's what art is all about- we all have different tastes.

Is the second card, based on our partner's profile, also a "re-swap," or should it be one that we create ourselves?

Do we send one re-swap plus one ATC of our own, or two re-swaps?

Lucky12324 07/13/2008 #

One must be a re-swap and the other is one you create yourself based on your partner's profile :-)

you know cards that have exhcanged hands from more than one person ironically are doing its function and are more special than other cards, after all it is a trading card. thats my opinion though.

I love this swap, and wish I could join in! But, I'm a newbie to Swapbot (but have been doing mail art/ATCs since 2004). I have so many ATCs that I just don't care for.

Bummer.

cbzcando 08/13/2008 #

Artist's names should be let as is on ATCs.

LINDA50 08/13/2008 #

I think the entire idea of this swap is basically rude. You are asking people to publicly declare that they do not like another persons work. I think that you could re-swap without all the drama of how terrible the persons work was.

NEVER alter an ATC it should be traded in the same condition the artist sent it to you in.

kylanicole 08/14/2008 #

You can please some of the people some of the time...

I don't think this swap is rude. It doesn't take an artist to know that not everyone has the same likes, and dislikes. Personally, if someone has an ATC of mine that they don't like, I would prefer it be traded about until it can (hopefully) fall into the hands of someone that DOES enjoy it. We can respect the work put into the ATCs we receive, but we cannot be forced to LIKE the card.

LOL...I would laugh my butt off if I received one of my own cards back X] That would be okay, though; I know I like all of my ATCs ;)

Susi 08/14/2008 #

Linda50, I agree with you completely. Most people put a lot of work into making their ATCs. I would hate to have have my ATCs sent off to some one else. It would be like giving away a gift I had given.

MissAndree 08/15/2008 #

While I do not mind my ATCs being re-swapped, I prefer for people to keep my name on the cards.

I am not ashamed of the work I create and while it cannot please everyone, I hope that it will please some people. At some point, it pleased me, or I would not have sent it out.

Lucky12324 08/16/2008 #

I find it interesting that I received no complaints the first time I did this swap...perhaps someone is already angry/hurt/sad because one of their cards was "re-swapped" in my first one? lol

What I'm saying is, why all the fuss about it now? It's not like this is a new concept. There are other swaps similar to this one as well, have you complained on them all?

KarenFife 08/16/2008 #

It's a great idea to reswap! I have a hard time picking out something from my collection that I don't particularly care for. I would love for my ATCs to move on. If someone doesn't like a swap, I think they should not join it instead of making negative comments. Also, I would like to see the comments be only for the participants in a swap .

i dont know, i am a big critic of myself and tend to think my cards are ugly :) but thats just me
