About Me

I've been sending mail art for 15 years and am loving getting involved in it again after a few years' break.

These days I spend most of my time working: I teach and perform circus (trapeze, handstands) and copyedit books, mostly young adult fiction. But swap-bot is helping me make time to get back to my crafty, letter-writing, tea-drinking, zine-making, mail-sending roots!

Things I Like

  • the ocean (sharks, deep-sea creatures, jellies)
  • outer space (the moon, the planets, stars)
  • circus (contemporary and vintage, especially trapeze and handstands)
  • language, languages, words
  • handwriting / hand-lettering / calligraphy
  • ways of understanding the body (anatomy -- the sacrum is my favorite bone! -- and holistic health)
  • peace and quiet (tea, letters, museums, walks in the woods, writing/journaling, solo train rides)
  • dance (ballet, rhythm tap)
  • tarot images, archetypes, and ideas
  • black-and-white photography
  • figure drawing
  • images of the annunciation (though i'm not religious)
  • minimalist art, abstract expressionism, color fields (agnes martin, ellsworth kelly; pinterest board)
  • lines and borders (string figures, watershed boundaries)
  • math and science (topology, elementary particles)
  • queer culture and community

Things I Like to Receive

I love handmade, artsy, unique, and/or quirky postcards (feel free to send me a handmade one you are proud of, even if the swap says not to -- I will be delighted and won't rate you down for it! vintage is great too).

It makes me happy when the message side tells me something about the person's day, or asks me questions, or is generally thoughtful and/or interesting to read.

I like black tea (flavored and unflavored) and herbal tea (I prefer ones containing just herbs, no added flavoring, but it's not a big deal). I don't drink green tea much, except for matcha.

Other Things

I love to receive mail in a handmade or decorated envelope.

I love to learn a little bit about you or hear about your day.

I have been collecting stickers to use on postcards and letters since I was a kid, and I especially love little ones that fit on the back of a postcard.

Flat(ish) items I like to receive: stickers, fancy and/or colorful paper or cardstock for stationery or postcards, blank postcards, stickers, fabric scraps, ribbon, face masks (those are to pass on to a teenager I live with), temporary tattoos (artsy ones for grown-ups, not kiddie ones), and tea.

Bigger items I'd love to receive: See my Amazon wish list linked to at the top! Any ATC supplies, postcard-making supplies, colored pens and markers (especially brush pens for hand lettering), Instax film, books about drawing and hand lettering, art and photography magazines.

My favorite colors are magenta/raspberry and teal. I feel unreasonably happy any time I see these colors!

Things I'm Less Excited to Receive

I'm not so into tourist postcards, although it helps if you tell me about YOUR experience with the thing that's pictured! I'm not religious, but don't mind receiving anything that's meaningful to you. I'm gluten-intolerant... but I doubt anyone is planning to send me cookies anyway ;).

Favorite Crafts

I love to make, send, and receive handmade postcards, stationery, and envelopes. I also love to make and admire other people's artist books, book art, and zines.

I crochet and sew, but I don't find time for either much lately.

Favorite Books

Favorite writers include Anne Carson, Laynie Browne, Maggie Nelson, and Natalie Goldberg. I also love YA fiction, especially anything with dragons.

Favorite Music

Female singer-songwriters, folk/acoustic music, classical, and experimental contemporary classical music.

Comment: Hi Megan, thank you for the NYC card! I agree completely about postcard books. My solutions have been the same, too. So many torn cards... I think postcards are probably best for people who want to keep them intact! Thanks again!

Response: I'm so glad you liked it! I was bummed that the gloss medium I used to seal it made the ink run a bit, but ... live & learn!

Comment: Oh wow after a 2 hour drive home from a work project I got the mail but waited to open your swap till after dinner to better appreciate it -- definitely worth the little wait! I just love all of the LAVA and other circus postcards; I hadn't known handstands were a thing, very cool. I think I'll make an art journal with them. And the ever lovely Graphic 45 papers will definitely find their way into the journal. Thanks also for the Instax photo of the balcony window and birdhouses: great Instax pic! Many thanks for making my day.
Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed it! (I had a lot of fun sifting through my old files to see what LAVA material I had duplicates of.) Handstands are one of my passions!

Comment: Thank you very much for the beautiful and interesting card, Megan! And also thank you very much for putting pretty stickers on it and writing so much, loved that! :) I can imagine that was unpleasant riding your bike with lots of people in your way, good that you found a way around that :) I often happen to ride my bike during the "main bike traffic" here, and there sometimes are "bike traffic jams", that can also be annoying :D But some ways are less used than others, so I often can change to these then. Thanks for sharing your experience and best wishes!
