My Blog about Choice-Based Art

About Me

I am in my 12th year as an elementary art teacher, and I love my job, but I am quitting at the end of this year to pursue a masters in Art Therapy.

I have been married since 2005 and my husband works at his father's bicycle shop and has a degree in Painting and Drawing. We have one daughter, born in 2006, and she also loves art. She is in a dual language program at my school where she is learning Spanish.

I lived in Germany as a child (in Schwetzingen, which is near Heidelberg) and would love to meet a German pen-pal around my age (I was born in 1981) with similar interests. I would appreciate any messages in German, actually. I can still read and comprehend without a problem, but I am out of practice speaking and writing.

I Like/Love --

Carl Sagan, Legos, Tacos, All things Back to the Future, Bears, Mid-century modern furniture, Scrabble, Settlers of Catan, Funny Swatch Watches, Street Art, Coffee, Midwives, A good breakfast, Pentominoes, Zines, A good pen, Funny handmade creatures, Yarn, Feminism, Human Rights, Global Politics, Muppets, Fraggles, Pen Palling, History, Disney World/Epcot, National and State Parks, Museums (and thier gift shops!)

Colors: Grey, Orange, Blue

Arts & Crafts

I spin, knit, crochet, and dye yarn. I have done some yarn bombing, and I would love to do more. I love street art of any kind. Sometimes I like to make mini-zines. I joined postcrossing a few years ago and I love hunting for postcards.

Roy Lichtenstein, Edgar Degas, Margaret Kilgallen, Rene Magritte, Jacob Lawrence, James Jarvis, Kehinde Wylie, Norman Rockwell, KAWS

If you can't tell by my list, I like Folk Art, and art that contains visual puns and humor, juxtaposition, and irony.

Music -- Folk, Punk, Pop-Punk, Grunge

Authors -Natsuo Kirino, John Irving, Ursula Heigi, Willa Cather, Larry McMurtry, Haruki Murakami, Guy Delise

Movies -- Popeye the Movie, Bottle Rocket, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Muppet Movie, Alice's Restaurant, Parenthood, Lost In Translation, Back to the Future, The Wedding Singer, Ghostbusters, White Christmas,

Comment: Thank you very much for all of your great postcards! :) That sure would have been a heart even without the fourth card that arrived today! :) I love that you picked each postcard with care (loved all of them) and wrote detailed about your December. Thank you for sharing your December with me! Seems to have been quite a busy month for you. And thanks for the nice stamps :) Oh, and I have to admit, that I like that the text is almost everywhere where had been free space, looks like lots of text then and adds detailedness to the card :D Wow, what a big school celebration, looks fun, my school never had anything like this ;) Looks like the children could do lots of different things there. Yes, I watched some of the cartoons as a child :) Best wishes!
Response: Thanks!!! I will message you my address:)

Comment: I love Norman Rockwell! I grew up in the town 15 min away. It took me forever to finally give in and buy Takenoko and I love it. It's great because people young and old can really enjoy it. I have Catan too.. but the same problem as you so it's still in plastic, ha!

Thank you so much for your marvelous letter and the enclosures! I want to keep the yarn out and fondle it, but I bet my cats do too ;) I'll will reply as soon as my brain & time allow.

I'm with you on the Zazzle PCs - a lot of our local stores are selling local artists' postcards that are printed via Zazzle or Vistaprint. It doesn't bother me, but I know some people feel very strongly about store-bought cards.

NicHahn on Jul 3, 2011:

I just invited you to be a member of Classroom ATC. Have you ever thought it would be fun to have you kids trade art with other students from around the world. I'm an art teacher from Minnesota, USA and I want to do a ATC trade with other art teachers so we can have a professional conversation to see if Swap-bot might assist in Classroom ATC Trades. Join our swap and group if you want to learn more.

Hope, i apologize for not writing you back (after our postcard journal thing) - I think you're way cool and still plan to carry out my letter writing campaign. I HAVE actually started a letter, but I just can't seem to get my act together on finishing it... sorry I'm such a slob! Ann

Oh my! Thanks for the adorable mini zine you sent, angelling the pen-pal intro zine swap! It's so great (but I don't know what you meant when you said you used 'Pandora'. Eep! I don't understand American references sometimes)

(Also, I just about died when you said you had a friend who knew all the Elephant 6 guys!)
