About Me

I hit a thousand fives! πŸ‘Œ My name is Pat Covington. I am a RETIRED university art professor and administrator ( note the word retired)!

I live in Florida 9 - 10 months of the year because I like to be warm and hate socks. I have to live by water and all that goes with it. I have a home on a salt water basin and love watching the manatees play. We have been having dolphins lately playing and fishing in the basin. Such fun to watch.

I still have a home in southern Illinois (Carbondale/Murphysboro). It is on a lake and quite hot there in the summer. Much hotter than Florida! I go up there in June to remodel anything that I feel needs it and to meet up with our third golden girl. There are three of us. Jamie ( known in swap-bot land as jamnj), dusty, a lawyer who will never retire, and myself. We go everywhere together except dusty stays in illinois in the winter to practice law. She retired as the university's lawyer and now has her own firm. She will be in trial until the day she dies. She is also a big foodie and makes ice cream with liquor in it. We are heading down to Panama the first of November for a foodie cruise. I tore my Achilles’ tendon so I will not being walking much. Guess I will be looking out from the balcony!

We have two dogs. One is a cocker spaniel and one is a yorkie- poo that thinks she is a Great Dane. The yorkie-poo, Guinny, named because she squeaks when picked up, lives in florida most of the year. Our cocker, (we all claim all of the dogs), Peppa, stays in Illinois and goes to the law office everyday. Every staff member spoils that dog. She even sits in on staff meetings ( in a chair at the table)! We lost Peppa at the end of August. That was a tough one. Peppa went everywhere with Dusty so there is a big house without a fur baby walking around. She will have to get another baby when we get back from Panama. She is very sad right now so hopefully the cruise will help. Just got Dusty a new fur baby. A bichon from a friend, 11 weeks old and is with me in florida right now so I can teach him a few things. His name is Teddy and he is a very sweet boy. He will be headed to illinois after thanksgiving. What a lucky dog.

Back to art! I love good design. I am a paper maker but have not done much since I retired from the university. I have been flipping houses and building houses so I have been getting my creative juices working in a different way. I am always remodeling so everyone calls me Sarah Winchester. Interesting character in her own right. She was always remodeling her house to keep ahead of the spirits.

I love the unusual and the mixing of unlikes is always of interest to me. Natural things are always part of who I am. I also love whimsical applied to normal items. The unexpected is always appreciated. Steam punk is also a favorite. I have degrees in anthropology and art history, so my art takes a slant towards Native American images. Not the typical images, mostly symbolic.

I have been having fun with the ATC's since it is so different than what I use to do. I find myself being whimsical on the ATC when I never would have gone there with my huge paper sculptural pieces. It is good for me. I am also having fun with steam punk and skinnies.

I went to school in Albuquerque and grad school in southern Illinois where I was a professor and an administrator for 33 years. I retired at 56 and have been having a blast ever since. I would recommend retirement to anyone! ( I was a very young professor).

I have had cancer twice, the first time was at 50, the next time I was 63. The second time was from the medicine I took for the first one! They now know that I should never have been given that medicine, but that is how they learn. I am fine except for lymphadema which I control fairly well. Neither cancer was past stage one so I feel very lucky and appreciate every day. I had both knees replaced at the same time almost ten years ago and I am doing fine. Would encourage anyone to do it. My knees were attacked by a drug I took for an infection from breast cancer surgery so they had to be replaced. Don't you just love those drugs! Some are great, others not so much. I had my left shoulder replaced in December 2014. Had the right shoulder replaced in September 2015. Glad all of that is over. Well, it was not over, had to have the left shoulder replaced again, this time with a reverse replacement this April 2016. Going thru security at the airports is interesting to say the least.

I have a great sense of humor and most people laugh at my quick wit (roommate's words). I am a happy person and enjoy doing whatever. I find enjoyment in most things except shopping. I get what I need and I am out of there. My roomie, Jamie, could shop for days . I can wait in the car and keep myself busy! The other roomie, Dusty, goes to the grocery store everyday! Now that is just wrong. We have another roomie, Lynn. She is my brother's ex girl friend. They were together for over twenty years. It is getting crowded here.

I enjoy movies when there is a good one. I travel and have been lucky enough to have seen a lot of the world. Sure does make me appreciate home. Africa is my next big destination. Happened in November! South Africa was beautiful! Safaris were fun and it was wonderful seeing elephants and giraffes, rhinos, lions and all other animals in their natural habitat. It is a loong way over there.

I like card games, dominoes and trivia, word chums and yes that stupid candy crush!

Favorite Crafts

ATC s, Jewelry, metals Paper making, paper clay Making objects from found materials, Actually there aren't too many crafts that I do not like. I am not a knitter, is that a word?

My environment

Love whites with color accents. The house in florida has reds and warm woods with lots of white. I actually love all colors. I find the mixing of two unusual colors interesting and fun. Pastels are my least favorite.

I pledge to send my swaps before the deadline. If you do not receive a swap from me, it is lost. I always mail my swaps, so if you do not receive one, please pm me so I can get another one out.

I pledge to rate as soon as I receive your wonderful swap. I love to see what others think of the swap that I sent, so I figure others want to know also. I make my swaps for others, so I believe feedback is the most important aspect of swap-bot.

I do not require extras to give you a heart. I believe that when swappers put their heart into their creation they deserve the same from me.

I will read your profile and will do my best to make the swap about you when I can.

Comment: Thanks for a great swap--I haven't thought about using the three men in top hats for quite a while---I need to bring them out for some use again now and then. They seem the quintessential Tim Holtz----when one sees them, one instantly knows they are Tim Holtz. I need to do some exploring to see what he is up to so far in 2018; he must be working on some new products to hit our wallets as he does every year. I look forward to adding some of his newest Christmas items from 2017; he had some amazing dies and stamps and a few stencils and more. Glad to know your Achilles Tendon is FINALLY healed -- that took forever! The new orthopedic surgeon is in now rush to do the hip replacement as there is still a bit of soft tissue separating the two bones. He had a neurologist do injections in the groin area where the pain was so bad. That has helped immensely--eliminating the pain entirely for several weeks and has kept it from occurring now little more than a couple times each day. I can live with that for certain! Thanks for a great swap! OH--almost forgot---my son is engaged--the most wonderful Christmas gift and answer to years of prayers. They went to Germany for Christmas and he proposed as they left midnight mass at a gorgeous, ancient Episcopal Cathedral. He gets that romantic heart and love of beauty from his mother [ :-) ]! They are both food science nerds and amazing chefs--she adds baking to his meals. Baking has never been his interest. They made the most amazingly delicious dinner for us the last night before they left for home last May. They worked off and on for almost two days with all their plans and the grocery shopping. They'd been planning this for months and refused to let me even pay for the groceries they needed! Take care--I think you're going to get chilly again as we certainly are!
Response: So glad you liked Timmy’s men. I forgot about them also and I love them. His new products are coming in February. I saw a preview on one of the websites. I had fun doing this atc. I am signed up for your other ones also. It is suppose to start warming up and be in the mid 70s by Friday which it was today. Thankfully our subtropic climate does not get that cool. North of us an hour is much cooler. So happy to hear about your sons engagement. How wonderful! Also glad to hear that your hip is hanging in there. Jamie and I are headed to a crop tomorrow. Hope I can get some work done. I have a bunch of swaps to do. Thank you for the heart. PatπŸ’•πŸ’•

Comment: Wow! Thank you so very much for the wonderful altered book cover. I love the honey combesque Christmas tree and the silver background just makes it pop! I love it when creative uses are found for every day objects and you have a wonderful eye to be able to envision a Christmas tree in that way. It is already hanging on my Christmas shelf. I absolutely love it!!!
Response: So glad you liked it. The honey comb is the inside of large cardboard. The silver was silver leaf. I enjoyed making it knowing that it would be in southern Illinois. Thank you for the wonderful comments. PatπŸ’•πŸ’•

PeggyO rated for VTH: Spritz & Flick Distress ATC on Oct 14, 2017
Comment: Pat, thanks for a very "Tim" ATC and the beautiful note card I'll be able to put to good use and the pages from what I think must be from an Arabic dictionary. The technique sounds like it will be fun. I have one swap to finish and pack up to mail and am hoping to get to the Spritz and Flick swaps. I'm in all three of them, making one large piece of paper to spritz and flick and use that for all three backgrounds, and since they each go to different people, I can make the ATC x 3. Thanks for a great swap as always.
Response: So glad you liked your Spritz and flick atc. I think you will have fun doing it. Thank you for the heart. Oh the dictionary is Chinese. PatπŸ’•πŸ’•
