About Me

mystery reader, baseball fan (Brewers are home team), quilter, nature stamping, animal shelter volunteer, frogs, cheezy 1950s movies, gardener , classic car owner. I review books about cars and Formula One racing.

Favorite music: classic rock (Young Rascals, Yardbirds), Motown (Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Al Green), bluegrass (Sam Bush, Alison Krauss and Union Station)

Favorite films: anything by Mel Brooks, Monty Python, comedies with Walter Matthau, Blues Brothers

Favorite authors: nonfiction: David McCullough, Simon Winchester, Richard Preston, Paul Theroux, Jane Leavy, Jane and Michael Stern. Favorite mystery authors: S.J. Rozan, Julia Spencer Fleming, Robert B. Parker, Ed McBain, Donald Westlake, Joan Hess,

Favorite TV: Criminal Minds, CSI, Top Gear (BBC version), MST3K, Columbo, The Simpsons, Futurama, NCIS,

Postcards: especially like major and minor league ballparks, goofy ones with giant fish jumping in boats, Route 66, movies, strange tourist attractions.

ATCs: Recently got interested in these. Don't have any preferences at the moment; I just like to see what others can create.

Recipes: cookie recipes (every year I participate in a cookie exchange, make 70-80 dozen cookies). Like un-fussy recipes that produce a large batch of cookies.

Likes: Route 66, lenticulars (those things that used to come in Crackerjack boxes. We called them winkies When you tilt them one way they show a picture, when you tilt the other, the picture changes),cookie cutters, snowmen, CHOCOLATE, sloths, llamas, spice mixes, bookmarks, cute socks, anything Godzilla

Dislikes: religious material (but secular Christmas items are okay--snowmen, snowflakes, candy canes, cookies, reindeer, Santas, holly, wreaths, ornaments, trees, presents, doves, the words peace and joy)

Allergies: not allergic but they clash with my meds: grapefruit and salt substitutes

I own a cat named Lulu and used to own a Springer Spaniel and Golden Retrievers. We have three rescued pugs in the family. I always wanted to own a Newfoundland. I've been to seminars on cadaver dogs, search and rescue dogs.

Comment: Susan, Always nice to find another avid reader and one who likes mysteries as much as I do. You have some authors that are my favorites including CJ Box, Lori Rader- Day and Joan Hess (who passed away this year). I have met them all - Ann Arbor is the home to Aunt Agatha's Bookstore and they have lots of fun and interesting author events, unfortunately they are closing after 26 years in August. They will still be partnering with the AA library for author events, but won't be the same. The one on your list that intrigues me the most is the one by Kathleen Ernst - I have not read any of her books and having grown up on the border of WI and IL, I think I will have to get one of her books to try. I read Noir by C. Moore - better than his last, but not as good as some of his past books. I read Goldfinch for a book club I belong to and enjoyed it. Have a great summer of reading! Thanks for the list - there are a couple of books I will want to add to my summer of reading list.
Response: Hi, Our last bookstore in town shuttered its windows a couple of months ago. The mystery bookstore in Madison closed a couple of years back. I fear public libraries will not be far behind (and I say this as a retired librarian). Susan

Comment: Thanks for your list and cute bookmarks😀 Yeah, I’m with you; I don’t get how the titles were chosen either. I agree on the “Fifty Shades” one. Doubt it’ll stay on the list in the next few years.

25 Days of Christmas in a Padded Envelope --- Just had to add that my two cats LOVE the two small toys and the munchies you sent for them. The toys made a big hit. Thank you for being so kind.

Hi Susan - Hope you had a nice birthday on the 1st. Sort of a hard time to get a special celebration of your own. I have a son born on Dec. 29, so I know how it goes.

Hope it was nice. We swapped in Recycle Christmas Card #19 - Reindeer.
