Hello, Fellow Travelers :)
We're all traveling through life, and bumping into each other makes the journey more fun!
Like so many others, I'm caring for people on both ends of the age spectrum, and also trying to take care of myself. I'm easily moved to laughter (and irritation-still working on that), happily married and mom of two effervescent teens. My daughter (17) and son (15) are the reason for mostly everything. We are a foster family, and learning a lot about ourselves in the process.
Living in a beautiful and rural part of NJ (close to nature, quirky towns and the Delaware River) is a great joy.
INTERESTS: Gardening for food and pleasure (especially native plants, permaculture, and foraging); hiking; learning about other cultures and beliefs; art (esp. Outsider Art, collage, vintage ads, letters and print media of all kinds, and folk art) modern design; mid-century modern stuff; museums; people watching; flea markets; science news; old things in general; color; humor; collecting on the beach, reading; making things that make people happy; window-shopping; new ideas; hanging out in libraries and bookstores; children; and my family. I still like vampires.
FAVORITE COLORS: Green, blue, turquoise and purple. Also browns, beiges and natural colors, hot pinks and purples; sometimes orange and yellow. Well, just about anything besides red and black (in combination with each other), peach, or terra cotta.
I even read while blow-drying my hair! Some of my favorite books, in no order at all: The Girl With All the Gifts, A Wrinkle in Time, LOTR, Ahab's Wife, Elegance of the Hedgehog, Harry Potter, The Kitchen God's Wife, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Huck Finn, State of Fear, Poisonwood Bible, Pillars of the Earth, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, Island of the Blue Dolphin.
I enjoy contemporary fiction, historical novels, the humorous essay, craft and design books, sci fi, fantasy, garden/nature books, graphic novels, and whatever my book club tells me to read. I spend too much money and time on magazines of all kinds, but I love them.
YA books help me keep up with my kids. (But really, I'd read them anyway) Some favorite authors: Melissa Marr, Suzanne Collins, Stephanie Meyer, Cassie Clare, Maggie Stiefvater, Laini Taylor, Michael Grant, Veronica Roth.
Eclectic- love a lot of stuff from the 80's to now, pop/rock/folk/some country. I have tried to like jazz, but am one of those people who can't shake the headache.
ART AND CRAFTS: I'm an appreciator of anything hand-made. I'm passionate about collage, gluing things in general, and mixed media. Also love modern art/design, folk art (have you ever visited the Museum of the American Visionary in Baltimore?), art with an element of whimsy, vintage paper/lettering/postcards/ephemera, old advertising, and anything nature-inspired. Well-made and full of character are the qualities that draw me in.
MOVIES: Sci-fi is my hands-down favorite, and I'll see just about any film in the genre. Space movies, disaster flicks, action-adventure, fantasy, some chick flicks, historical fiction (Little Women, Nicholas Nickleby, Last of the Mohicans), and Jane Austen stuff. Also smart comedies. Love to be lifted up and/or terrified.
TV: Through the Wormhole, Colbert Report, Walking Dead, Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Wallender, documentaries about the cosmos and physics, design shows, Buffy re-runs, comedy.
STUFF I LIKE: anything hand-made or thought-provoking
themes: birds, ocean life, celestial stuff, microscopic things, insects, fortunes and fate, mystery of the universe, and nature in general.
minerals and gems
papers of all kinds (especially handmade or vintage)
kawaii (no, I haven't outgrown it yet)
japanese and asian indian stuff
things from other countries
calligraphy (especially copper plate)
old metal things
bees and dragonflies (realistic)
old hand-written pages
old little boxes and containers
the smell of rosemary, mint, and clove
learning to really like tea (esp organic), after kicking my old diet coke habit :)
And you know what? If you send something you made, put time or thought into, I'm gonna love it.
NOT SO FOND OF: anything that's red and black, together
burgundy, peach, terra-cotta, and similar shades (though I can tolerate a little bit mixed in to a broader palette.) I really have tried getting along with them.
dollar store/Walmart/mass produced stuff
cutesy-type things like Disney/teddy bears/snowmen. etc.
missing the trailers at the beginning of a movie.
