About Me

My day job is code monkey, but my favorite hobbies are low-tech.
Postcards are my #1 hoard! Six-year-old me would be so. proud. of my collection. Sometimes when I need to feel quiet and calm I sort my postcards into different subcollections based on theme.
I crochet off and on and I've been at it again lately, working on a bunch of Star Wars amigurumi. I knit poorly but it's a good fidget while I watch TV or visit with family. My knitting is limited to simple 10x16 security blankets for the local cat rescue. Maybe someday I'll try knitting a hat (but probably not).
Art journaling is another minor hobby of mine. I'm not the most original (most of my ideas come from Pinterest and Youtube, and I still do the found poetry thing) but it feels nice to play with techniques. I try not to worry about whether my pages are too basic, dated, or derivative. For me, making mediocre art in private is a radical act. By the time I graduated college, my instructors had started preaching the importance of choosing only one hobby, excelling at it, monetizing it, and using social media for self-promotion. So accepting that I have too many interests, and simply enjoying the act of doing them, is a way of rejecting hustle culture.
I also enjoy penpalling, so feel free to drop me a message if I seem like your kind of people!

Favorite Books

Lately I've been enjoying mysteries and Japanese novels, with an occasional Star Wars new canon novel mixed in here and there. A while back I read a listicle recommending several novels/authors from cultures other than my own, which got me back into the habit of reading. Now I read a bit every night as part of my bedtime routine. My Goodreads queue is intimidatingly long and keeps growing all the time.

Some books I've particularly enjoyed are Convenience Store Woman, Earthlings, The Midnight Library, There's No Such Thing as an Easy Job, the Aunty Lee mystery series, The Marrow Thieves, Jennifer Government, Real Food/Fake Food, The Dorito Effect, Civilized to Death

Favorite Television

The Handmaid's Tale, Game of Thrones, The Blacklist, The Walking Dead, The X-Files, Firefly, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Into the Badlands.

I also like anime, although I don't watch as often as I'd like. My favorites are Aggretsuko, Africa Salaryman, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Uchuu Kyoudai, Panty & Stocking, Beastars.

My Favorite Things

  • sticky notes
  • washi tape samples
  • cute notepaper
  • postcards
  • cartoony aliens/little green men
  • yeastken, rilakkuma, tarepanda, pompompurin
  • squirrels
  • cats
  • journaling cards
  • notecards (handmade or purchased)
  • galaxy/space themes
  • lime green, silver
  • metallic colors
  • recipes that don't rely on "tingly" ingredients... I manage a health issue by abstaining from foods that tingle on the tongue (like pepper, ginger, clove, nutmeg, mustard, etc)

Thank You, but I'd Rather Not

  • scents
  • tea
  • candy/food
  • religious items
  • ribbon
  • friendship books
  • kids' stickers
  • glitter

Favorite Themes
  • art
  • weird
  • funny
  • inappropriate
  • cats
  • squirrels
  • raccoons
  • feminism
  • US state maps
Prefer to avoid:
  • ad/free
  • handmade, unless that's what the swap is
  • real photos of sea creatures (illustrations like Dory and Nemo are OK!)

Comment: Hello April ! I received your swap today and thanks very much for the Saturn PC! I love anything to do with space, including the different plants. I have my own Telescope and I'm usually out there looking up. Thanks too for the answers to the questions. Like your weather there, it has cooled off to need a hoodie in the evenings. But I love the cooler weather though. I'm glad our heat wave is over. It was too much for me. Loved your answers. Although I'm not sure what post office did it. But they stamped right over your answer for C. 🙁

Comment: Hello April, thank you for this letter! Now it’s my turn to write back!
Response: Yay! Looking forward to hearing from you! :)
Comment: Thank you the postcard. It made my day to receive this piece of happy mail. I am definitely going to have to checkout the books you listed. Thank you again and keep on swapping...
Response: You're welcome, I'm glad I could brighten your day! :)
Comment: Thank you for the lovely note about gardening (this is something I want to try). I love the stickers...awww...look at the cute kitties! I appreciate you looking at my profile and sending these lovelies! Wishing you the best success in your gardening. Feeling cooler temperatures, too - yay!
Response: I'm glad you liked it! My "bell peppers" turned out to be mislabeled sweet cherry pepper seeds, here's hoping they're mild and yummy. :D

Comment: Your beautiful notecard arrived today. Thank you so much. It was a delight! I LOVE the trees notecard, the cute decorated envelope, the packet of stickers and your written note. It’s still summer here in South Texas, or was until it started raining yesterday. Today is milder than it was. I have a tomato plant and some cucumbers in my Fall garden, and they should be fine. We also have a pear tree, but I think it’s lived its lifespan, unfortunately. Your use of pears in your cooking sounds so creative and yummy!
Response: I'm so glad you liked it! That's too bad about your pear tree. I hope the veggies grow nicely through the Fall!

Comment: Love this little cutie! I haven’t had a kitten in a long time. I saved my two cats I have now at about a year old. It is rewarding when you get a lap cat right!! My tabby Daisy isn’t much of a lap cat so I take it when she gives it. 10 min!! How’s that remote mouse doing??
Response: Haha the remote mouse was fun the first time. Now, well, at least they're entertained by watching it roll around the floor...

Comment: Ha, I think our letters might have passed in the mail!
Response: I think they did! I'll write back soon :)
Comment: Yes Haw! First I loved your little letter and realized I haven’t hidden any art since we moved 4 years ago. Will be forced to make a few goodies to hide since we’re headed out to New England for a month on the RV. My envelopes are FABULOUS, including the one you mailed my swap in, so it’s going into my travel journal for sure. Many thanks. Wish I could give you oodles hearts.💕💕💕💕
Response: Awesome I'm so glad you like them! I hope you're having a wonderful adventure!
Comment: Loved your answers, what a fun swap. Loved the little kitten too!
Response: Thanks, glad you liked it! :)

Comment: Thank you for a fun letter! I'll read it in detail post work and may come back to edit my response. Haha. Hope you had a good August! Mine's been a roller-coaster. Phew! Glad it's nearly over.
Response: You're so welcome! I hope September has been less eventful for you :)
Comment: Thank you for your notecard and all the wonderful extras. That television show sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out. I’m looking for something new to watch besides YouTube videos lol.
Response: You're very welcome, I'm glad you liked it! YouTube really is a black hole, haha... I'm a huge Ryan George fan and quote his "First Guy to Own a Cat" video way too often :D

Comment: Dear April, thank you very much fpr this wonderful swap! ^-^ I have the same tradition about keeping gift wrapping paper from my family and it' so fun... some pieces are with us by now for several years on christmas, the pieces getting smaller and smaller, but never really gone. XD Have an awesome summer. Yours, Maxi
Response: You're very welcome! It's nice to hear someone else's family also keeps the wrapping paper. :D (Do you keep the bows, too? We had sooo many of those premade stick-on plastic-ribbon bows!)

Comment: Thanks for the cute cat PC!! I also have 2 cats. One will sometimes sit on my chest but never my lap & the other only ever once in a blue moon will sit on my daughter's lap but never mine.
Response: You're very welcome! It's funny how cats decide who their person is. Your cat sounds a little like my previous cat, we nicknamed her "Scarf Cat" because she only wanted to lay on our chests and necks. She'd come up to a human, tap them on the arm, and meow loudly as if to say, "You must recline! Now! Lean back and wear me like a scarf!"

Hi April! Just an FYI that your IG link here on your Profile isn't working. SB included an extra https: in it that you'll need to remove for the link to work. I'd love to see your IG! Meanwhile I'm preparing a letter for you for WIYM. 😊

FemShep is the BEST rolemodel ever. EVER. I mean, in the Crucible at the end, she hears Hackett and it's all "What do you need me to do?" I mean, she's already done everything! cough Anyway, yeah, who wouldn't want to be FemShep? I think even my husband would want to be FemShep. Hence why my next tattoo is going to be the N7. Also, looking at your profile, I think we might be kindred spirits.
