I made a triptych honoring people who influenced me 30 years ago. This should give you a pretty good idea of the foundation of my artistic development. Here’s the list: Andy Warhol, Krishnamurti, Marcel Duchamp, Philip K. Dick, William Burroughs, Aleister Crowley, J. G. Ballard, Timothy Leary, James Joyce, Captain Beefheart, Hundertwasser, Olaf Stapledon, Jorge Luis Borges, Anais Nin, Seth, Gore Vidal, Oscar Wilde, Edward Abbey, Kurt Vonnegut, John Cage, Brian Eno, John C. Lilly, Gurdjieff, Frida Kahlo, Diane Arbus, Joseph Cornell, Charles Bukowski, Miles Davis, Walt Disney, Alan Watts, Jim Morrison, Truman Capote, and Stanley Kubrick. Plus a few I missed: Leonard Cohen, Nico, Spalding Gray, Frank Zappa.

Art is anything you can get away with. Follow your own weird. Create your own style. Don’t model your art on what others are doing and don’t copy yourself. Creation should be play. Try out lots of different themes and techniques. Learn from your failures. Say something. Art needs content. Ideas are as important as craftsmanship but make things as well as you can.
