About Me

16th of February 2018: I gave up chocolate and sweets for lent so please none of that until after Easter - thank you.

31st of January 2018: I am doing a few less swaps this year as I'm working longer hours now (which equals more pay :D but less crafting time :'( ). I've also made it my New Year's Resolution to try and get one of my short stories published - hold thumbs for me!

I sent out some swaps in December while I was on a roadtrip - a lot of the small towns only have one pick-up a week so I am very sorry about the delay! If you have not received anything from me please let me know.

17th of November: They have stopped supplying the "airmail stickers" that go with an international stamp as they say it is costing the post office too much money. I've started writing on the word "airmail" - I'm not sure if this will actually make it go any faster but it's what the PO does! I am also sending out all Christmas swaps by the 24th of November as I have been advised by the PO that any going out later than this will not arrive before Xmas.

9th of November: I hosted my first swap, it was a lot of fun: Christmas in a matchbox

General Bio

Cape Town embroiderer, curator, creative writer, 27, female and human.

I studied art history, curating, English literature and creative writing which all feed into my interests. Talking of which: another is food. All food. Love cooking and hand written recipes (note: I am a vegetarian and I don't eat seafood either). I'm trying to learn Spanish and I spend my free time embroidering and playing Dungeons and Dragons - yes, I am a nerd.

Currently I live in Cape Town, South Africa (my hometown) in a tiny little flat with my partner (Jacques) and way too many spiders! I've lived in CT most of my life except for a while in the U.K. (Loved living there and I do miss it sometimes). I work as a curator in a giant archive in the city center where I do more admin and less curating than I would like. As stated above I am 27 but I feel like I've always been 40 and I certainly dress like I was born in the 40s. I'm a member of sendsomething and postcrossings and I will make anything I send you look pretty (promise).

Clothes, cats, coffee, vintage everything, old kitsch stuff, most art, writing (of course), chocolate, anything that's been sewed, Virginia Woolf, Catholic iconography, kawaii, miniatures, the colour pink, pale yellow, magic, true crime, podcasts, Studio Ghibli, swimming, all water, antiques, second hand clothing, thrift shops, charity shops, grocery shops, (all shops?), lists, cooking and baking, gin, dancing, botanical prints, The Arts and Craft Movement, William Morris, old maps, Jacques, feminism. I don't like exercise unless it is funtime dancing or swimming. I have trouble breathing (it's a long story but, basically, my nostrils are messed up on the inside and they don't let in enough air).

So many! Write me and I will give you a list. But here are a few: To the Lighthouse, A Room with a View, Howards End, Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, The Secret History, The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine, Lolita, On Chesil Beach, Lydia Davis short stories, Miranda July short stories, Mary Gaitskill short stories, Lorrie Moore short stories, (a LOT of short stories).

Favour artist at the mo:

Rothko (I know he's not contemporary but I had a moment when I saw another of his works in Madrid last December). Ps. I loved Madrid so much! Pps. I love Lisbon just as much! (also got to go there in December).

Gilmore Girls, Twin Peaks, The Wire, Arrested Development, Freaks & Geeks.

I often don't get to choose which films I watch. Jacques is doing his PhD in film so we watch a very wide range of stuff: some of it really good, some of it really bad. My favourites right now are "Mulholland Drive", "Memories of Murder" and "Spirited Away", "The Royal Tenenbaums", "Rear Window". But they change frequently.

Somethings I'm good at:

Dressing well and eating too much.

Something I'm bad at:

I really like plants and flowers but everything I grow turns out a disaster.

Talking of things I'm bad at: Can anyone help me? I want to add some images of the art I make but I can't figure out how to do that. Someone more tech savvy please help me. Update: Rockybeach helped me enormously by telling me to take a look at @homeanheart 's profile. Anyone needing tech help look there!

If you want to get me something (but you really don't have to this is more of a cheeky wishlist):

*Anything MFM related (My Favorite Murder Podcast)

*Vintage embroidery

*Anything vintage, anything old.

*Anything with William Morris prints/designs.

*Miniatures (I really like small versions of grocery products eg. I have a 1 inch milk carton).

*Vintage botanical or vegetable pages.

*Hanging Christmas decorations for December - handmade ones would be extra special.

*Tiny embroidery hoops (about one inch or smaller) for necklaces and brooches (you can't get them in SA so I have to import them). Like these

*Paperclips and small pegs in interesting designs or shapes

*This is a bit weird but I would like a Kewpie doll.

*Catholic iconography or little statuettes, especially of the Virgin Mary.

But otherwise anything linked to my interests. Preferably no Disney stuff or beauty products (I don't use them much) and I like tea but I have so much right now (obviously won't rate down if I get tea or if a swap calls for it). Although I like kawaii and stickers I'm not into anything too childish. Phobias: The muppets and all other sock puppets. Just writing that made me feel a bit queasy.

Look me up

Notes on the Cape Town postal service

It can be quite slow. We have had a few strikes over here this year. If you do not get your post within six to eight weeks of me hitting "sent" then please, please message me and I will resend - I don't mind resending and I would rather do that then you don't receive anything. I click on "sent" after I have dropped off the mail at the post box outside my local post office. They usually have two pick ups a day but only one on weekends so bare that in mind.

Open to private swaps - PM me

This is me out of focus: JL

mandigutterrose rated for AFWLS Not Tea & Note Cards on Mar 30, 2018
Comment: Not sure what happened to my rating...sorry for the delay!
Comment: Wow, what neat tiny cross-stitching! I love the cat and the message :). Thanks so much for the postcards; they are both beautiful! I am really interested in Bes, so the card that your student made is a really special addition to the package:). How amazing to see ceramic that old! Respect to you and your student for such an interesting choice! Hope that cooler days are ahead for you.
Comment: Thank you for the beautiful card! For publishing your stories I suggest self-publishing or compiling them all together into one book and finding a publisher who specializes in these kinds of books. Research the publishing too! I've heard all sorts of nightmares regarding some of them.

Comment: Thank you for the lovely envelope & embellishments. Unfortunately the agate must have ripped through in transit and didn't arrive but your note about your grandmother more than makes up for it.
Response: Oh nohow awful that it got torn out! I hope it just fell out and wasn't stolen. I will send you something to make up for it after Christmas. Sorry I can't send sooner: just got back from a road trip and things are hectic this side with festive season things!
Comment: Thank you!! I like all items.

bstrong rated for Pink and Blue washi swap on Dec 12, 2017
Comment: What a beautiful assortment of washi. I don’t have any of these, so they are going to be a nice addition to my collection. I also love the little extras you sent, I actually use that little paper to help keep my swap bot book organized, so it was great to see some more come in the mail. Thank you very much and hope we get to swap together again. I also love to swim, haven’t been able to lately because of health condition, but looking forward to the day when I can get back in the pool. And you know I never thought of it until reading your letter that you guys actually have Christmas in summer, that seems so strange to me. We don’t have much snow right now and it’s not very cold, unusual. But you never know what’s going to happen, it could be a year type of once it starts snowing it won’t stop and then will just get dumped on. Do you guys get snow at all?
Response: We never get snow! Except once many years ago on my mother's 21st! It's just not cold enough here for snow, even in the winter. Our Christmases are all barbecues and beaches. I just got your swap - will rate soon! xo
creatingsomethingspecial rated for Pink Washi on Dec 11, 2017
Comment: thank you so much for the beautiful pink washi and all the extras. I love the dog stickers, they are adorable. And the tea smells great, I can't wait to drink it. You are so lucky it is warm in Capetown, it has been raining here and been cold for days. I hope you get the washi I sent for you soon!
Response: It's a pleasure treasure!

Hello darling! I finally received the tag 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 the envelope full of Christmas goodies is amazing!! This one took a while but it's mostly because our Customs warehouse was relocated at the airport, so there were massive delays in mail delivery, but this was so worth the wait! I love every single detail and I want to thank you for being so kind and generous, I' in love with all the items you sent me, thank you!! P.S: How cool that you have a friend named Camila, it's a very popular name here, especially among those born around 1987 like me hehe, looks like there was a famous soap opera, or book, I can't remember, but it's quite popular around here hehe. Have a fun week!
